Excited to announce that this fabulous risograph poster “Plants and People Kicking Ass Together” by the brilliant @ashacanalos will be on view in “absolute alternatives” curated by Maleke Glee, opening this Thursday, Jan 29th at @cadvc_umbc.

The show includes a few artifacts from Volume III of @toolbookproject “Work Book”
including this limited edition poster, which was an insert included with all Work Books.

Seems like a good time to think about “Kicking Ass” in different ways right now…

As artists, Mitchell and Aimi (me) have very wide range of art practice, sculptural to sketching, tinkering, philosophizing, about many interconnected topics from capitalism, power structures, ambilineal past of ancestors, nature, war and peace, etc. Spatial Oddity Studio was our craft focus endeavor where we can explore ideas of the everyday ritual, something seemingly simple, abstract and close.

Ceramics is amazing. Just as glass. Raw earthly materials that can be molded and petrified by heat. Here is a set of little stoneware dishes with white glaze that allows the clay-body's little specks to show through.

Made to hold tapas and sides. Kimichi, pickles, olives, and salty snacks. Small portion of ice cream, chocolates, nuts and any kind of delicious sweet nourishment.

During our takeover of the ToolBook instagram, we will be listing some of our @spatialoddity_studio Oddities for sale here that are not on our webstore! ToolBook Project exclusives.

This is a glass mug. Often talked about and rarely seen. No hot liquids! It was made using glass canes (rods of colored glass) which must first be made, then sorted into patterns, in the case of this mug the colors are olive green and duck egg white. The cane pattern is then heated on a ceramic plate so that the glass is soft enough to gently squeeze the canes together and fuse them, then they are rolled up around the circumference of the tip of a glassblowing pipe made of steel. Have we lost you yet?! Once the canes are on the blow pipe (imagine the straight glass canes going from being side by side on a flat surface to rolling into a cylinder, one end open and the other attached to the blowpipe. The open end is closed off with tooling, turning, and heating which then forms a bubble, and then the blowing and shaping may begin! The handle is added last with fresh clear glass from the furnace.

A little bit about us:
After a decade of experimenting in the ceramic and glass arts, Chinen Aimi and Mitchell Noah developed Spatial Oddity Studio as a way to share the everyday objects we make.

As lovers of coffee, tea, snacking, and sweets, it has been part of our practice to explore these craft processes through the vessels that we use to appreciate these delights: cups, bowls, mugs, bottles, and the many other forms that function for the foods and drinks we enjoy. As makers we embrace things like mistakes, irregularities, and play. This lends a truly handmade quality to our objects! We are influenced by the day-to-day through the patterns we see, the textures we touch, and the things we eat and drink. We hope this freshness translates from our oddities and into the ways you use them.

In this spirit, each object is an extension of our dreams for the table it finds or hands that hold it. Spatial Oddity Studio aims to belong with friends, family, and fellow object lovers, and provide a sense of home. Every oddity is made to share a unique experience with its user and become part of your daily rituals and routines.
