off a lonely fire road way above Malibu is @topangatower, a gorgeous, ominous-looking citadel of brutalism built by PT&T in 1972. after it became obsolete as a communications node, it fell into disrepair, and like all good brutalism became a canvas for decades of graffiti. architects John Jennings and Sasha Tarnopolsky bought it in 2005, and spent most of the following two decades working to transform it into one of the wildest dwellings in California (no small feat), and have stewarded its site into a mini ecosystem rich with native flora and water—it was likely spared from the Palisades Fire, which burned right to its property line, thanks to its landscaping. they even managed to save some of its graffiti, with its massive front address numbers carved out of decades of paint.

it was fantastic to spend some time in the quiet up there, and a privilege to spend a morning with John and Sasha. it must be incredible to watch the seasons, and the days, pass by from this place.
