Lexi Kohanski of Torah Studio comes to Shel Maala to explore her new method of Talmud study: Talmud, kinda-SVARA-style, but in ENGLISH bit.ly/talmudintranslation Link in bio It’s a really cool, innovative, method to improve Talmud-logic fluency without Hebrew/Aramaic, and one we want to look into using more in the Yeshiva. Lexi will be sharing pedagogy and key resources, showing an example of how it works and answering our questions. Suggested donation of $18 http://bit.ly/shelmaaladonate More info on the method she’ll be going into here: https://www.thetorahstudio.org/intensives/the-sacred-temporary%3A-talmud-skill-building-in-english-%2F-tractate-sukkah Link also in bio^

At the River (Moishe’s Hot Moms) We’re so excited to share the art and Torah of @lizawesome.art in collaboration with the Jewish Fabulous. ✨❤️ Here’s some words from the artist: “9x12. This celebration of the creation of found family is made of ink strokes on cotton paper, which were then torn and collaged into the story of Baby Moishe floating down a river in a basket. On one bank, Jochabed passes the basket to Batya, while Miriam stands guard. On the other bank, the tree of life grows and spreads its leaves high into a rainbow. The collage was made using paper torn from a series of oil-based mono prints exploring directionality and intention with pallet knife strokes. I created this piece in response to the Parshat Noach; I’d learned from the @torahstudio Art Midrash that the words for ark and basket were the same. Jay was announcing their maternity leave, and the group was discussing god as a loving, learning parent capable of making mistakes. The piece came together intuitively, starting with the river and the tree. The rainbow becomes a portal where god transforms from an angry flood to loving mothers.” #queerjewishart #queerart #jewishart #collage #collaboration #biblicalart #exodus #shemot #babymoses #multimedia #midrashart

when the tradition asks us to confess what we’ve done wrong, what happens if what we’ve “done wrong” is just exist in a bodymind the world refuses to accept? Yom Kippur doesn’t ask us to erase ourselves. It invites us to come back to ourselves. To return to the truth underneath the performance. #autistic #autistictorah #actuallyautistic #judaism #torah #queer #queertorah #disabilitytorah #disabilityjustice #jewish #crip #autisticjews #autistictorah #cripjews #disabledjews #jewishcommunity #torahlearning #jewishlearning #neurodivergent #neurodivergentorah #highholidays #roshhashana #yomkippur Purple background - text is all below in the caption

The Irredeemable Elisha Ben Abuyeh (a.k.a. Acher) With three other sages, Elisha Ben Abuyeh enters a mystical orchard (pardes) and comes out spiritually transformed. Acher is angry at the fact that bad things happen to those who do mitzvot and good things happen to those who transgress, so he vows to break every single mitzvah. He hears whispers of his own damnation, choses heresy over the ways of Torah, and becomes known as ‘Acher’; the Other. While Acher sees himself irredeemable, and perhaps G!d does as well, his friends try to redeem him anyways - showing him and us, the readers, that there is the possibility of redemption for everyone. Despite eschewing Torah, he affirms other’s ability and right to participate in religious ethics. People like Rabbi Meir and Acher’s daughter take pain to remind Acher and his community that he was learned and has valuable knowledge, which is confirmed by divine interference. 🎨 by Liana Wertman from @torahstudio #jewishart #queerart #queerjewishart #talmud #talmudart #queertalmud #punchneedle #textileart #acher #thepardesstory #haggigah

L’Shana Tovah from Matir Asurim ❤️ As we enter into the High Holidays and embark on a new Jewish year, we know that nobody is free until we are all free. As we bring in 5786, we are reaching towards each one of you, our beloved Jewish community across and beyond bars, with love, with care, with a commitment to justice and healing. Here’s a glimpse of what Rosh Hashanah observance looks like for our inside (incarcerated) and outside (not incarcerated) members: Slide 1: Commentary on Mishna Rosh Hashanah 3:7 from our inside member community, The Orthodox Jewish Community of Jester III, redacted into a Talmud-style page by MA Education Coordinator Rabbi Eli DeWitt. Created in our first Torah from the Inside Out cohort taught in collaboration with @shelmaalayeshiva. Slide 2: Envelopes hand-addressed by MA volunteers who are mailing over 200 pieces of high holiday mail to prisons and jails across the U.S. and Canada. Slide 3: The cover page of our first-ever Matir Asurim calendar entitled “In Joy and In Blessing,” created with the support of @torahstudio. Thank you to the many volunteers, collaborators, and teachers, inside and out, who build this community of learning and connection. The new year is always bittersweet when so many are still behind bars so in one breath we say: Shana Tovah, free them all.

Super excited to announce my next round of NEUROQUEER TALMUD! This time we will turn to Bava Metzia and a section of the Talmud that discusses personal harm. Together, we will ask: How do the rabbis understand harm between people? How do systems of power and hierarchy show up in rabbinic discourse? What might it mean to read these texts through the lenses of disability, queerness, and neurodivergence - especially in a world still shaped by ableism and oppression? We approach Talmud not as a fixed inheritance, but as a tradition to be reclaimed. Rabbinic literature has often been used to uphold systems of exclusion - but it also contains radical tools for imagining otherwise. Neuroqueer Torah means bringing our full selves - our neurodivergence, our queerness, our disabilities, our contradictions - into dialogue with the text. It means refusing to leave parts of ourselves at the door, and discovering what Torah can become when it is read from the margins. We will meet over 5 sessions (2.5 hours sessions each week) over Zoom. We follow the Guidelines for Safe and Neuro-Affirming Spaces: optional cameras, structured breaks, slow pacing, access to written materials, and a consent-based approach to participation.
