Have you ever seen this species? The California Spotted Owl is mainly found in California, as their name suggests, but you can also spot these birds in the Sierra Nevada in Nevada and in Baja California, Mexico. You are most likely to find this subspecies in old-growth forests.

Jumping for joy after a successful setup! Having helicopter support means the Goshute Mountains HawkWatch crew doesn’t have to hike thousands of pounds of water, firewood, food, gear, and camping supplies two and a half miles straight up a mountain anymore! Thank you to the @nvenergy Foundation for supporting the annual heli lift to make sure our crew is well stocked for the season ahead.

Because of you, we are conserving raptors around the world. Thank you to everyone who attended Wings Across the World, one of our field trips, bid in the auction, or donated in support of our international program. With help from people like you and our generous sponsors, we were able to raise nearly $70,000! Cheers to another year ahead of protecting some of the most at-risk and understudied species globally.

These birds were handled for the purpose of scientific research under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey or under a special use permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service for the purpose of science education and in accordance with all state permitting requirements.

Can you believe our Goshute Mountains HawkWatch crew used to hike up all their camp supplies, including an enclosure with pigeons and songbirds? We are so grateful to our supporters at the @nvenergy Foundation for sponsoring our heli-lift so we don’t have to hike thousands of pounds of water, firewood, and food up 2.5 miles and nearly 2,000 ft of elevation! Thanks, NV Energy Foundation, for covering this huge cost during our most expensive time of the year.

Today, we celebrate three years of Tori Thorpe at HWI! Before joining our team full-time, she served two seasons at the Manzano Mountains and one season at Commissary Ridge HawkWatch, along with a multitude of seasonal positions. This year, Tori is most proud of the new skills she is developing while in graduate school at Utah State and gave her first scientific presentation at the Raptor Research Foundation last fall. Join us in thanking Tori for all her hard work!
