May 28-31, 2026

We had an amazing trip to Capitol Reef and the surrounding areas. We did two big day hikes in the park and didn’t see a single other person on the trails. We found beautiful, secluded camping spots, spent two nights in Grand Staircase-Escalante, enjoyed a spontaneous meal at @hellsbackbonegrill, bought some new signed books by one of my favorite authors @pamlhouston, and tasted some local cider and mead @ettaplacecider. Certainly a trip to remember. ❤️ I hope everyone in America gets the chance to experience these insane landscapes up close and personal. We need to continue to fight for wild places as the current administration tries to undermine public lands. taken in Capitol Reef National Park by @torithorpe

The last time I visited White Sands in 2017, it was only a national monument. It became a national park in 2019 due to significant resource discoveries, such as human footprints from 21,000-23,000 years ago. Pretty neat! #protectpubliclands taken in White Sands National Park by @torithorpe

We had an incredible road trip to Big Bend. I think the Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande was my favorite part of the park. It was truly a magical place. ✨

February 21-22, 2026:

We were so lucky to have good snow conditions for our cross country ski Yurt trip that we planned a year ago. I’ve never committed to a plan so far in advance in my life. One of the birds I was most excited to see in South Africa in 2021: the lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus).

I am also sad that people are losing their conservation-focused (and many other) jobs in America due to politics. 💔 I don’t have the capacity to say more, but I want people that enjoy seeing things, like birds and nature around them, to stay awake and tuned in. by @torithorpe
