🇨🇦 THE BAY: A CANADIAN LEGEND SINCE 1670

Few names in Canadian history carry the legacy of Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), founded on May 2, 1670, when King Charles II of England granted a royal charter to a group of English investors. Originally established to trade furs across the vast lands surrounding Hudson Bay, the company became one of the most influential commercial enterprises in Canadian history, helping shape the development of the country itself.

Over the centuries, HBC evolved from a fur-trading powerhouse into a retail institution, opening department stores that became landmarks in cities across Canada. Generations of Canadians grew up shopping at The Bay, known for its iconic stripes, the legendary Hudson’s Bay point blanket, and its place in the country’s retail and cultural history.

From the fur trade of the 17th century to the department stores of the modern era, The Bay’s story is deeply woven into Canada’s past — a remarkable journey spanning more than 350 years. 🇨🇦

(Slide 4 is a part of Toronto history). I’ve been photographing this Queen West storefront for the last couple of years thinking it was just a quiet space waiting for a business to move in. Little did I know someone actually lives here, and he turned it into a storefront for only a day.

We feature a lot of retail spaces on this page, but the story behind this one is so incredibly cool. After three years of working as an engineer, T quit his job to launch his clothing brand, ‘If Not Now Then’. In just 12 days, he completely flipped his living room into a retail space to host his very own pop-up.

Swipe through to see how he pulled off the transformation. Follow his journey at @tdesilvaworld!

🥙 A Bloor West Village favourite since 1984! 🇨🇦

For more than four decades, Falafel World at 2396 Bloor St. W. has been serving up flavour and keeping the neighbourhood well fed. A longtime local staple, this is the kind of place that reminds us why independent restaurants are such an important part of Toronto’s neighbourhoods.

In a city that’s constantly changing, there’s something special about the places that stick around, welcome generations of customers and become part of the community’s identity. ❤️
