🌊 North Jersey Dead 🤠
DSO Englishtown 9.3.77

After leaving home in Laverne (and leaving both her gas cap and my wallet atop the pump 🥺), we headed up to the north Jersey shore town of Asbury Park, home of the famous Stone Pony where the Boss was born. 🎠 There on the summer stage, Dark Star Orchestra performed a rare, pre-announced show: Englishtown (NJ) September 3, 1977. While we had tickets in hand, we never actually entered the venue as the sights and sounds were perfectly beautiful from a grassy hill between the boardwalk and the stage. So many Philly friends were found and the scene was the full-on freak, complete with Shakedown strip, vintage VWs to keep Laverne company and plenty of loud motorcycles with greased up sandy beachgoers.

Of the 125,000+ who attended the historic ‘77 show at the Englishtown Raceway, I met at least four local witnesses. Harry, (slide 6) whose buddy got busted for taking Quaaludes in front of a cop and left the venue, leaving Harry to fend for himself that scorching day. Mark, (slide 4) who in an interview I taped, recalled the Hells Angels roaring up through the middle of the crowd on their bikes as ‘the seas parted’ so they could get a better view of the band at the front of the stage. Mary, who wore a 1960s Indian dress and danced alongside us and was clearly channeling the psychic energy of the two heady days. And George, (slide 8) a t-shirt buddy of mine, whose Grandmother Fru lived outside of the raceway and kindly allowed hippies to park on her lawn for free!

It felt so incredibly liberating to wear an original shirt from Englishtown and to soak it and my hot summer body in cold water, without a care in the world...

As the second set unfolded and the band launched into Terrapin Station, an incredible red-orange full moon showed its face over the water and burned bright as the space got weird and whirly. 🌝

So many thanks to @darkstarorchestra and @the_stone_pony and the city of Asbury Park for making this beautiful event possible. ✌🏻
