an ode to salmon 💭 ‘93 Spring Catalog ‘93-94 Salmon & Orca T-shirt: white (L)(sold) ‘93 Salmon T-shirt: white (XL for sale)(sold) ‘98 Salmon: Deep Under, bluegrass E. 00’s Salmon Run T-shirt: white (L) E. 00’s Salmon Run Tote: black [deadstock](sold) Notes: With the release of the new “Salmon Energy” pattern featured this fall, I thought it would be appropriate to display the legacy and connection between the brand and salmon. Since the early 1990’s, Patagonia developed various means to advocate and protect ecosystems for wild salmon. Many of these interludes were displayed throughout the catalog years, which also intertwined with products that were offered. The pieces chosen for this post highlight a few of my favorite salmon designs. They function as a reminder to protect the creatures that have brought so much life to generations of people and ecosystems. Slides 2, 4, 6, and 8 are scans done by myself from the @patagonia ‘93 Spring Catalog. See earlier posts for an in depth look at the plush salmon. ‘03 retro rhythm hoodie sample: eucalyptus🌿 Notes: Wow! I’ve been sitting on this piece for almost a year now and had time to research, discuss and appreciate it. This is easily the most significant Patagonia piece I have ever had in my collection and still can’t believe I own it. Included in this post is the ‘02 retro cardigan in eucalyptus; my idea was to display the consistency in color and materials used. As you can see in the unzipped slide, there is an absence of a care/season tag. In addition, notice the material of the size tag, consistent to 2003 and prior garments rather than the nylon tag that was used on all consumer production retro rhythm hoodies. Another point to mention that isn’t apparent in the photos is the heavy elasticity with both the wrist and waist cuffs, which was changed for consumer production. Now you might be wondering if this could be a prototype or something else other than a sample. @remnants__of (fellow eucalyptus sample hoodie owner) took the lead on contacting an employee at the Patagonia archives, to find out more answers. And the conclusion found was that Patagonia never created a consumer production of the retro rhythm hoodie in this color way; however with presence of logo and size tags, the contact deemed this piece as a probable near finalized sample rather than a prototype. With that being said, we do not currently have any information on who these were given to or the extent of how many were created in this stage of production. One more point to consider in evaluating the significance of a piece is condition. And I am thrilled to say this specific piece was remarkably well taken care of with no matted pile, stretched elastic, or stained fabric. I want to give a massive thanks to @jrearth for passing on and trusting me with such an incredible piece of Patagonia history! Great Pacific Wave Evolution 🌊 E. 80’s GPIW ~ chouinard variant: light blue (M) SOLD L. 80’s GPIW long sleeve: black (L) SOLD ‘98-‘01 Great Pacific ~ Osaka: white (L) ‘98-‘01 Great Wave: tan (L) ‘98-‘01 Great Pacific ~ Ventura: white (M) SOLD ‘02-‘03 Great Wave: navy (XL) SOLD Notes: In this post, I thought it would be interesting to archive the evolution of design with Patagonia’s Great Wave t-shirt graphics. Hokusai’s Great Wave artwork was a fitting choice for the brand considering Chouinard’s workshop was (and still is) situated a short walk to the water in Ventura. Notice the mistake on the latest navy shirt’s graphic, seemingly the print designer forgot when the company was established. Scan captured from Fall of ‘82 software catalog. Fear and Loathing inspired tees ‘87 GD lot tee XL (mint) ‘88 Chouinard: Beyond the Vertical L (thrashed) Notes: Last post is a very interesting crossover between Ralph Steadman (the artist who created the cover art for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and some of my favorite music and climbing equipment history. In the Chouinard’s graphic, see elements from Joshua Tree national park. And in the GD graphic, notice elements from lyrics, symbolism, and lot culture. Patagonia Bombachas ‘89 Bombachas T-shirt (L) ‘90 Men’s Twill Bombachas: Bronze (34 Long) ‘91 Men’s Twill Bombachas: Khaki (30) {dyed Saddle Brown} SOLD Notes: We are long overdue for a set of posts, so here it is! I thought I’d try something new, a more neutral background to let the pieces speak for themselves. In this first post, we have a couple of pieces that aren’t discussed much within the Patagonia community. The Bombachas; design was influenced by pants worn by South American gauchos. As trends come and go, these pants have remained highly relevant due to their strong construction and bold shape. The T-shirt, an item promoting the Bombachas from Spring of ‘89, is even more rare I’ve found. gorpcore final boss 🥋 dome to boot ⬇️ 1988 Capilene/Wool Hat- Jags: black/purple/emerald 5th Gen Oakley Juliet X Metal- ruby FA ’00 Classic Retro Cardigan (natural/fire) Late 90’s Nike ACG “Expose Yourself” tee FA ’02 Rhythm Off-Width Pants: tar Modern La Sportiva Makalu Notes: Last fit post of the series! A few things to mention here; the most notable piece in this outfit is actually the pants.. The off-width double knees have a super unique seam line designed specifically for comfort while using climbing harnesses; easily making them my favorite pair of pants in my collection. Also the ACG tee, although not the most rare or valuable, very much encapsulates ‘90s outdoor nostalgia/aesthetics. I want to give one more big thanks to @fru.wear for helping choose and layout all these beautiful pieces for this collection ❤️ A lot more time and effort goes into posts like these than you all can probably imagine so having a friend like Fru is huge. Dripagonia 💦 Top to Bottom ⬇️ Late ‘90s Mesh Duckbill Hat Late ‘90s Oakley Romeo 1: X Metal- black FA ‘99 SST Wading Jacket: hunter ‘90s Waterproof Logo Tee Late ‘70s-‘80s Stand Up Pants: khaki ‘01 Nike ACG Rockwood Notes: Super excited to reveal a couple pieces in this post!! Firstly, the Oakley Romeo 1s; as many of you probably know these shades are highly sought after due to their titanium construction & celebrity provenance. So finding these under market was huge! And more importantly the waterproof logo tee… After seeing @champagnecepp post this tee last year, it became the highest ISO on my list. I really wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to find one for any price due to the lack of information on it. This leads me to believe it’s either a store sample or was only sold in very limited quantities/markets. The graphic in itself is also interesting; how the artist created the design to look perfectly like a zoomed in version of the patagonia label & water droplets on top baffles me. Truly such an amazing shirt that is more relevant than ever in today’s outdoor fashion. Rain Tee by Fru ‘90s Stand Up Pants: nickel ND Turtle Friction Belt Modern Bedrock Mountain Clogs: leather Notes from Fru’s repair~ “after receiving Matt’s tee, i searched high and low for the perfect material to fill in the gaps. after coming across a 70’s mushroom print curtain set from sear’s, i had a complete vision for what he was looking for. all the thread used was found at a yardsale in a big art box and color matched to fine details of the graphic. two of my favorite spots to repair were the tongue on the purple bear and the mushroom fit into the terrapin’s guitar..” Matt’s Notes: Over the past few months I’ve been curating some very iconic outdoor pieces. This post as well as my next two showcase some of my favorites & Fru’s custom repair on my thrashed L.L. Rain was the final piece of the puzzle I needed. This shirt has always been a favorite of mine and when I tore it up skateboarding (frame 5), I was absolutely devastated. I cannot thank Fru enough for not only repairing the shirt and putting so many hours into it (30+!!!) but also adding so much of his taste and uniqueness to an already special piece 🫶 I want to give another shout of appreciation to @owlsoddities for working out a great deal on the rhythm hoodie!
