A remarkable scene was captured in the water as a turtle was seen feeding on the carcass of a deer that had drowned. While turtles are often associated with plants and smaller foods, many species are opportunistic omnivores and will consume carrion when the opportunity arises. A dead animal can provide an important source of nutrients, particularly in environments where food availability changes throughout the year.

Although the sight may seem unusual, scavenging is a natural part of many aquatic ecosystems. By feeding on deceased animals, turtles and other scavengers help break down organic matter and return nutrients to the surrounding environment. What looks like a surprising encounter is actually another example of nature recycling the remains of one animal to support life elsewhere. 🐢🦌🌿
