Title: “Lightning Two-Zero: Firepower, Brotherhood, and Valor”
Author: Staff Sergeant Derrick W. Leath @derrickleathauthor

Unit(s) Served In:
-Detachment Bravo, 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company
-TOW PLT, 24th Marine Regiment

“Lightning Two-Zero” is Derrick W. Leath’s firsthand account of serving as a Firepower Control Team chief with 4th ANGLICO during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operating throughout southern Iraq, his seven-man team brought air and ground firepower to coalition forces while conducting reconnaissance, convoy security, surveillance, and quick-reaction missions far from conventional support.

The memoir reaches its most intense moments during the 2004 Mahdi Army uprising in An-Najaf. From a rooftop under sustained enemy fire, Lightning Two-Zero coordinated aircraft, engaged insurgents, and helped defend coalition personnel as the situation around them deteriorated. Leath captures the skill required to control a three-dimensional battlefield, but also the restraint demanded when civilians, religious sites, and restrictive rules of engagement complicated every decision.

Beyond combat, this is a story about the Marines beside him. Leath writes honestly about shared hardship, dark humor, command frustrations, and loss. His reflections show that valor is rarely the work of one person. It belongs to the Marines who trained together, trusted one another, and refused to break when the mission seemed impossible.

“Lightning Two-Zero” preserves an overlooked chapter of ANGLICO history and the opening year of the Iraq War. It is a tribute to small-unit leadership, adaptability, and a brotherhood forged through more than fifty combat operations. Leath’s message is clear: firepower may shape the battlefield, but trust in the Marines beside you is what carries the mission through.

Really enjoyed creating this piece of a snow covered soldier rocking the M1919 Browning Machine Gun and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
