Omg submitted my last paper for my Masters... Eek! I actually don't know how I did this... When I started at uni in 2004, I was such a terrible student. Always drunk, sometimes just didn't finish units, worked too much at Subway, would rather help other people with their work than my own... But when I moved away from on campus study at Armidale to online distance learning, suddenly I could focus! My grades went from passes and credits to distinctions and high distinctions. Even with a baby at home and multiple surgeries, my own writing ambition, and full time employment, I just plodded along, and now here we are! Ironically, even my teaching is moving to online now that I've reached this *crossroads of life. With further irony - the paper I wrote for this last assignment was an exegesis on two of my poems, one of which is published in my soon-to-be-launched book 'in quiet winds we settle' - is about female self sacrifice 😂 😆 🤣

Poetry Machines ~

From vintage cigarette-box relics to typewriter hearts, from flipbooks to programmed poetry machines — the world keeps inventing ways to let poetry fall into our hands like cotton, candy, coffee, or starlight.

Some give you verses for a coin.
Some spin words in space.
Some code words in lines like secrets.
Anything is valid to be turned into something that whispers.

This is the only photo I took of Sunday's Poetry sesh in Kerikeri haha! It was a great day meeting Dame Fiona Kidman and NZ Poet Laureate Robert Sullivan and all the poets and writers who attended. I'm stoked that Kim asked me to run a poetry workshop last minute when the wonderful poet Cadence Chung was unfortunately unable to attend. It was a great experience with lots of laughs.

Sampai jumpa lagi Bali...

This is the only almost non blurry photo I have of the second half of the trip and I blame @hayl_yr for distracting me haha!

Had the best 1985 model celebrations with the Aussie bogans haha! 😆

I always want to say after a holiday that it's time to get back to reality but travel is the real world.

Can't wait to get home and hug my baby and share oleh oleh with my whanau and write up all the journaling I've done.

During the pandemic I submitted a poem to Madness: an anthology of world poetry. I was stoked that my poem 'Only The Birds' was selected since it was long and apocalyptic and I wasn't sure where I could find it a home. I have since recorded this on to my Spotify avenue Having A Lark (I will come back this for those 3 people who were listening and have noticed I've taken a little break due to reports, marking, uni, life in general!). The editor Kesheb then did a call out for poems related to the theme 'Mountain'. My poem 'Wild' was chosen to be included in Poetry Planetariat Volume 10. You can search poetry planetariat online or go to the @worldpoetrymovement website to read this among other mountain poems! 😃 happy writing and happy reading!

Kia ora to everyone who came out for our fabulous "Bodies by the Beaches" event in Whangārei last night. We were stoked to return to Aotearoa's northernmost city for the third time; Northland crime and thriller writing is really thriving nowadays, which is great to see.

Thanks so much to @tracielarkwriter for her outstanding chairing - including a murder mystery game incorporated throughout the korero - and panellists @michaelboturwriter, @sherrylwriter, Coo Harkens, and Tannis Laidlaw.

Its' really lovely to see all the different iterations of our Mystery in the Library events being supported by local communities all across Aotearoa during our bumper 2025 season, and the different spins each library and author panel put on the events.

Had the best time hosting Bodies by the Beaches' @whangareilibraries last night to celebrate the @ngaiomarshawards! Congratulations to all of these amazing Northland authors and their publishing successes. Also congrats to the audience members who solved my murder last night and put up with my "ghost host" jokes. (Say that 10 times fast!) Thank you Craig and Meredith for organising this inspiring event. Thanks Heather for taking the pics! We spoke about AI and ethics and self v traditional publishing. I also interrogated these authors about their a Google Search history which was revealing and hilarious 😂 Twas Criminally good fun!

Great night at Whangarei Library talking all things crime fiction (and a bit about AI) with @tracielarkwriter as our bloodstained compere, Coo Harkens, Tannis Laidlaw and Mike Botur. Thanks, Meredith (librarian)! And Craig Sisterson for organising from London. #mysteryinthelibrary #nzcrimefiction #WomanMissing #crimefiction #PInovel @harlequinaus @harpercollinsnz @ngaiomarshawards
