#TheDayWithTrae - Opera singer Jennifer Johnson Cano (@jjcmezzo) recently sat down on The Day With Trae (@traeholiday) with guest host Deaunte Damper (@dampeyalife1) to discuss Seattle Opera’s (@seattleopera) production of Salome, running now through October 31 at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall (@mccawhall). Portraying the intensely dramatic role of Herodias, Cano shared insights into how the opera's sublime music, striking costumes, and dynamic cast bring this spooky-season favorite to life on stage.

Reflecting on her artistic journey, Cano recalled her initial plans to become a high school choir director in Missouri before formal voice lessons set her on a path to the grand stage. Offering advice to emerging performers, she stressed the importance of staying true to oneself, honing one's craft, and preserving personal autonomy while pursuing a career in the arts.

Salome is running at McCaw Hall now through Saturday, October 31. Seattle Opera is hosting a special "Pay What You Wish" night for Salome on Friday, October 23. Get your tickets today at seattleopera.org

Twenty plus years ago I made a vow. 💇🏾

For twenty years, I would put my focus on the inner work. My spirit. My emotions. My mind. And not cut my hair. I made mistakes, shed tears, walked through some of the darkest times of my life. I faces inner demons and trauma that was buried in the deepest places of my heart. I lost family and friends, found community. I found my teachers @raunneferamen who showed me a divine path and to whom I owe the deepest gratitude. Yuan Tze @renxuewashington who shared the 9 methods leading to realization and wisdom with Gongjing. I learned to breathe again and heal with @breathingcenter , to give back from @africatownsea and @spacebetween.community To visualize, to smile, to remember… This was never a hairstyle for me, it was a visual reminder of a promise to my True Self.

On my birthday, September 20th, I honored that vow and cut my hair.

And look at me. Still laughing at how light my head feels. 😂

20 years ago I thought this moment would feel like an ending. A finish line. It doesn't. It feels like a beginning.

Those twenty years taught me that healing isn't something you simply complete. It's something you live. Every truth that reshaped me now asks the same question: will you walk it out?

So that's the work now. Not working toward something. Living from it. Peace, discernment, right measure, choosing it again every single day.

The hair held the time. Now I carry the truth.

Grateful for every person who walked some part of this road with me. Here's to the next chapter. 🙏🏾

The annual Bull Stewart Alki Beach Powerlifting Classic recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades as the Pacific Northwest’s premier and longest-running outdoor powerlifting event. Founded by Bull Stewart (@bull.stewart) and his wife to support their family and promote local fitness, the initiative has expanded from a neighborhood endeavor into a major institution. Today, the program encompasses two fitness centers and trains athletes ranging from ages 12 to 90.

Beyond physical endurance and record-setting lifts, the event brought together a supportive, family-like community. Powerlifter Jessi “Warrior” Allen-Garibaldi praised the inclusive environment, which welcomed lifters of all backgrounds and physical abilities, including elders, amputees, and people with hip replacements.

A priority of Bull Stewart's mission is giving back to the community through youth development and drug-free athletics. Partnering with organizations like the Amateur Athletic Union (@aausports), the program has guided numerous young athletes toward winning state and world titles while earning college scholarships. By instilling values of hard work and consistency, the event continues to leave a lasting impact on future generations.
