Super inspiring tour of the TRAID warehouse today, where all items donated through donation bins, home collections and unsold stock donated by brands are sorted through by hand.

90% of clothing processed by TRAID is diverted from landfill or incineration by being resold through their shops and wholesale, redirected to other charities in need of clothing donations, used in artist and university collaborations, or recycled into building materials.

In the UK, an estimated 300,000 tonnes of clothes are sent to landfill or incineration each year. If you laid those clothes flat, end-to-end, they would form a fabric path long enough to wrap around the Earth 18 times.💀

After our last swap, we sorted the clothes left over at the end of the night, keeping some pieces for our next event and putting together a donation for TRAID. It was lovely to see where our donation goes in real life and the care that goes into sorting and handling each item.

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?

Ok, the bad news is that our charity shops are in crisis (for more on that, please read the brilliant book Charity Shop World by @tansyhoskins who spent 16 months working in one for research).

The good news is that there's so much we can do to help them. For starters, there are lots of brilliant initiatives that do specialist recycling and rehoming for the many things that our charity shops can't. For eg, @teemillstore @thisisjogon - with an incredible 90% save rate on our unwanted sports shoes - @thecashmerecentre @smallsforall @lovebravissimo @londonsockco

Plus, armed with a bit more knowledge (and thought) about what charity shops are (and aren't) able to sell, we can help our favourite charities fund their very important, life-changing work.

I like to set myself challenges that you could argue are somewhat pointless… but they do bring me joy. This challenge was aided hugely by Poppy my daughter who did the filming with incredible patience, provided some of the clothes, lots of styling tips, hair styling (the big beautiful bun), and importantly an abundance of laughter and fun for both of us.

All clothes either pre-loved or very old and worn and worn.

Something was accomplished here. Something special to her and me.

Super inspiring lecture with Jose Baladron from TRAID today, giving us an insight into their behind-the-scenes process and the scale of clothing reuse in London. We’ll be visiting the TRAID warehouse next week, where every item donated through their bins around London is sorted by hand.

It was a really interesting reminder of the importance of keeping clothes in circulation and finding new ways to extend the life of what we already have - one of the reasons we started HOT SWAP.

Wear it. Love it. Repair it. Wear it again. 🧵

For Second Hand September, we welcomed @traid to The Sessile for a hands-on clothing repair workshop, giving residents the skills to mend, repair and extend the life of the clothes they already own.

It’s part of our ongoing partnership with Traid, with textile banks across six Way of Life buildings making it easier for residents to give unwanted clothing a second life.
And the impact is adding up. Since 2024, residents at The Sessile alone have donated 7,228kg of clothing, equating to an estimated 61.52 tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced and 11,560.6m³ of water saved. 🌍

Here’s to wearing what we love for a little longer.
