Trance Thompson.

This guy. Lol. Funny story. But we started off on the wrong foot you could say. Both of us were cast in a production of Assassins in LA. Trance was playing John Wilkes Booth and I was Lee Harvey Oswald, and so we had a very long and intense scene together where his character basically convinces me to shoot JFK. Maybe it was his tall stature, or his forwardness with me, but I kept my distance. My overly actor-y self thought if we stayed “awkward” it would serve the scene better. Hah! Oh actors.

Well… as time went on I learned that Trance was head of a camp at Burning Man, a role that he has played for at that time 15 different burns. BM is a week-long festival of music and art in the desert near Reno, NV, and has a reputation to be rather “spirited”. I had been wanting to go for years now, so when Trance invited me to go, I said hell yeah.

That time in the desert with Trance and his tribe completely changed me. It’s as if a part of me had not truly been awake until I spent 10 days with these bohemians. And through each new heart-expanding and mind-altering experience, Trance was there, a steady and wise Chief who had seen and done it all, and who understood everything that I was going through. By the end of my time there, I had decided to leave LA, move to Bangkok, and step into a new chapter.

Trance and I have crossed over to a truly heartfelt friendship. I value his wisdom. He is no-nonsense and direct which I love. He knows how to lead and bring a group together while doing it like the coolest cat you’d ever seen. And he’s encouraged me out of a shell I never realized I had. So blame him.

Thanks Trance. I’ll follow you to the desert anytime my friend.
