I am feeling SO grateful and honored for this one 💛⚡️ A huge THANK YOU to Western Michigan University’s Department of Occupational Therapy for inviting me to be the keynote speaker for the Barbara A. Rider Colloquium this year!🥳🙏🏼 My keynote, “Bridging Practice and Possibility: The Uncommon OT Journey,” gives me the opportunity to share something I care deeply about, the many ways our OT skills can take us beyond the traditional paths we may first imagine⚡️ Over the years, my own OT journey has taken me into some unexpected spaces, and those experiences have continued to remind me that our profession is incredibly expansive⚡️ ✨Sometimes the path is not linear. 
✨Sometimes the role does not already exist. 
✨Sometimes you have to trust your OT lens, follow the need, and create something new. 🫶🏽 I am so thankful for the opportunity to share my own story, the highs and lows, the pivots, the lessons, and hopefully inspire students and practitioners to think bigger about where OT can belong⚡️ Because there are SO many Uncommon OT paths out there and I want more practitioners and students to know they have permission to explore them⚡️✨ Thank You 🙏🏼 WMU @WesternMichiganUniversity for creating space for this conversation and for giving me the opportunity to help shine a light on innovation, possibility, and the many ways we can use our OT lens to make an impact. The open house is on November 12th 7PM Eastern/4PM Pacific. Everyone is welcome to come - you don’t have to be an AOTA member to join the Open House. (The ongoing monthly meetings are for AOTA members.) This CoP connects members interested in innovative, entrepreneurial, emerging, and nontraditional occupational therapy practice and will provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, peer learning, resource sharing, member-led presentations and collaborative problem-solving. It’s exciting to see what started with an idea, passion, and a shared vision become something real and supported by AOTA. In Episode 108 🎙️ I sit down with Annie Tulkin, founder of Accessible College. Annie helps students with disabilities and their families prepare for and navigate the transition into higher education. Although Annie’s work is not OT per se, the intersection is undeniable: self-advocacy, executive functioning, routines, independence, environmental barriers, accommodations and meaningful participation in college life. Sound familiar, OTPs? This is exactly why I wanted Annie on the podcast. Her work reminds us that we do not have to stay in an OT bubble or wait for a position with “occupational therapy” in the job title. ✨ Introducing the Uncommon OT Student Spotlight! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ I am SO excited to start this new series highlighting OT students who are experiencing firsthand just how BIG, creative, and expansive our profession can be outside of traditional practice settings. 💜💗 And I couldn’t think of a better way to kick it off than with our very first student spotlight — Noah Whitman, USC @uscchanosot Level II OT intern at Exodus Recovery – Safe Landing, an interim housing facility serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Throughout his fieldwork, Noah had the opportunity to see what OT can look like in a setting where our role may not always be immediately obvious — but where our OT lens, creativity, communication skills, group facilitation, advocacy, and focus on meaningful occupation can make such an impact. Here are just a few reasons why my OT practice is kinda chic 😉 For me, being an Uncommon OT has always meant looking beyond the traditional roles, following the possibilities, and using my OT lens wherever it can make a difference — whether that’s in interim housing, creating meaningful programming with our clients, developing pet-centered programs, mentoring some pretty amazing OT students, sharing innovative OT stories through the podcast, or continuing my own journey toward my ppOTD. I’ve learned over the years that there really isn’t just one way to be an occupational therapy practitioner — and that may be my favorite thing about this profession.
