I DID IT! 🎤💜✨ That’s a wrap on my very first keynote presentation! 🥳 🙌🏽

I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful audience than the one I had at the Barbara A. Rider Colloquium at Western Michigan University!

WMU, the Midwestern warmth, kindness, and hospitality you showed me felt like one big, warm hug—and it was exactly what I needed. 💜

What an incredible experience to share my Uncommon Occupational Therapy journey, reflect on the many paths our profession can take, and be in community with so many curious, passionate, and inspiring occupational therapy students, OT practitioners, educators, and future leaders 🫶🏽

Together, we explored non-traditional occupational therapy careers, professional identity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the limitless possibilities of taking our OT lens beyond traditional practice settings.

I’m leaving with a full heart💜renewed inspiration, and so much gratitude.
🙏🏼Thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me, embracing my story, and reminding me why I love this profession so much.

One OT lens. So many possibilities. Same lens, different lines. 🚇💜

Here’s to continuing to explore, connect, and expand what’s possible in occupational therapy!🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

I am feeling SO grateful and honored for this one 💛⚡️

A huge THANK YOU to Western Michigan University’s Department of Occupational Therapy for inviting me to be the keynote speaker for the Barbara A. Rider Colloquium this year!🥳🙏🏼

My keynote, “Bridging Practice and Possibility: The Uncommon OT Journey,” gives me the opportunity to share something I care deeply about, the many ways our OT skills can take us beyond the traditional paths we may first imagine⚡️

Over the years, my own OT journey has taken me into some unexpected spaces, and those experiences have continued to remind me that our profession is incredibly expansive⚡️

✨Sometimes the path is not linear.

✨Sometimes the role does not already exist.

✨Sometimes you have to trust your OT lens, follow the need, and create something new.

🫶🏽 I am so thankful for the opportunity to share my own story, the highs and lows, the pivots, the lessons, and hopefully inspire students and practitioners to think bigger about where OT can belong⚡️

Because there are SO many Uncommon OT paths out there and I want more practitioners and students to know they have permission to explore them⚡️✨

Thank You 🙏🏼 WMU @WesternMichiganUniversity for creating space for this conversation and for giving me the opportunity to help shine a light on innovation, possibility, and the many ways we can use our OT lens to make an impact.

I look forward to being in community in Kalamazoo (my very 1st time in Michigan!!) and really hope to see some of you there on Friday! 🙌🏼

Are you an innovative or entrepreneurial OT practitioner?

This is for YOU!

@aotainc recently approved a new Community of Practice (CoP) just for us!!

The open house is on November 12th 7PM Eastern/4PM Pacific.

Everyone is welcome to come - you don’t have to be an AOTA member to join the Open House. (The ongoing monthly meetings are for AOTA members.)

This CoP connects members interested in innovative, entrepreneurial, emerging, and nontraditional occupational therapy practice and will provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, peer learning, resource sharing, member-led presentations and collaborative problem-solving.

It’s exciting to see what started with an idea, passion, and a shared vision become something real and supported by AOTA.

CoP co-facilitators:
@whole_life_healthy_ & @kristafrahmagency

Share this with your OT network, let’s pack the Zoom room! 🙌 by @transitionsot

⛔️Content warning: Sexual Violence‼️

💜 Like so many people, I have been deeply affected by the story of Jane Doe and the case surrounding the Cornell 7.
Jane Doe, a former Cornell student, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members in 2024. The criminal investigation into the case has since been reopened by the Tompkins County District Attorney.

💜 As a human being, I have tremendous compassion for Jane Doe. I cannot imagine the courage it takes to speak publicly through a legal process about an experience this painful and deeply personal. Her story has stayed with me because, throughout my career as an OT, I have worked with survivors of domestic violence, interpersonal violence, trauma, and homelessness.

💜 That work has taught me something I wish more people understood: violence does not end when the immediate event is over.

💜 Trauma can reach into almost every part of someone’s life—their sense of safety, relationships, sleep, education, work, self-care, routines, community participation, and even the occupations that once brought them joy, purpose, and a sense of who they are.

💜 This is where I believe occupational therapy has such an important role.

💡As OT practitioners, we can provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered care that asks not only “What happened?” but also “What do you need to begin participating in your life again?”

💡We can help survivors rebuild routines. Reclaim choice and control. Develop strategies for emotional regulation. Return to school or work. Reconnect with relationships and community. Rediscover meaningful occupations. And, perhaps most importantly, we can meet people where they are rather than deciding for them what healing is supposed to look like.

⚡️We can also advocate.

💡We can listen without judgment. We can believe that survivors deserve to be heard. We can recognize when environments and systems create additional barriers. We can respect someone’s choices, boundaries, and timeline. And we can advocate for spaces where safety, dignity, autonomy, and participation are protected.

💜After years of working with survivors, I have learned that heal by @transitionsot

✨ If you’re an OT or OTA student, emerging practitioner, educator, or someone thinking beyond traditional OT practice and seeking funding, share this episode with someone who needs to hear it!!⚡️

🎙️On this episode of The Uncommon OT Series, I sit down with Lawrence Liff, MA, Chief Development Officer, and Satvika Garg, PhD, OTR/L, Chief Scientific Officer at AOTF, to talk about opportunities that more OT students and practitioners need to know about.

We dive into AOTF scholarships, funding opportunities, eligibility, and the application process — with a special focus on those of us interested in non-traditional and emerging areas of occupational therapy.

Your path doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s to have value.
One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation: don’t disqualify yourself before you even apply.

Larry and Satvika share practical advice on how to communicate your experiences, leadership, service, interests, and future goals — and how those pieces can help tell the story of who you are becoming as an OT.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 💜🩵

I want to take a moment to celebrate three incredible guests of Hispanic heritage who have joined me on The Uncommon OT Series — Alondra Ammon, Vanessa Yanez, and Mabel Martinez-Almonte.

One of the things I love most about doing this podcast is being able to highlight the many different ways occupational therapists are showing up in our communities, creating change, and expanding what OT can look like.

⭐️Vanessa Yanez, PhD, OTR/L brings such an important perspective to oncology and cancer survivorship through her work as an occupational therapist, researcher, educator, advocate, and cancer survivor.

Vanessa Monique Yanez is an Afro-Latina, first-generation college graduate, occupational therapist, educator, and researcher with more than a decade of experience across diverse healthcare settings. She earned her PhD from Texas Woman’s University and MSOT from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Dr. Yanez co-founded and directed a private practice serving pediatric and adult populations, expanding access to rehabilitation services for underserved communities. She’s Assistant Professor at Keck Graduate Institute, teaching research design and lifestyle medicine, and contributes to the profession through scholarship, advocacy, mentorship, and professional service. Her scholarly and clinical work is rooted by a commitment to improving equitable cancer care.

Alondra Ammon, MOT, OTR/L has brought occupational therapy into community-based mental health and housing stability, supporting individuals as they transition from homelessness and work toward greater independence and stability.

⭐️Alondra Ammon, PhD, is a first-generation Salvadoran/Haitian American occupational therapist from Maryland whose journey is defined by resilience and a passion for healthcare equity. She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a dental assistant and hygienist, where she discovered her calling to serve others. She earned her B.S. in Kinesiology from San Francisco State University and a master’s in occupational therapy from Samuel Merritt University, where she co-led the Student Occupational Therapy Association, was awarded the Outstanding by @transitionsot
