I was complaining to someone about how stressful working in journalism in 2026 is, and I made the joke that arts coverage isn’t exactly war reporting, so if it’s both not important and not profitable, what is the point? This was gallows humor, but it is a worthwhile question of what cultural coverage brings to the table when culture itself is atrophied by new ways people consume information. The next day, I read this piece by Lisa Cunningham that restored my faith that someone does care about what we do as cultural writers.
Our field has to evolve somehow. Work, in its most ideal form, is meant to bring you some dignity and pride, and it’s hard to feel that way when the meaningful things you do bring in hardly enough to buy a cart of groceries, if anything at all. I am always open to hearing more of what people want in Petrichor, but the fact that it is a volunteer-run magazine spearheaded by an individual is inherently limiting. As always, thank you for reading and for sticking with me this long. – ER

“In the years since I transitioned from a newsroom into an arts communications role, I’ve seen how the absence of consistent arts coverage affects our community — in part because artists and organizations increasingly come to me with their questions, concerns, and stories, unsure who else is listening. Artists and executive directors alike describe uncertainty about where to pitch their work or whether anyone is still assigned to receive it. Emails go unanswered. I’ve heard from artists, arts leaders, and community members: many gave up on local media years ago. I open media newsletters myself each morning and often see the same stories repeated, not because nothing else is happening, but because newsrooms have fewer reporters and editors consistently seeking out untold stories.”

Camden Yandel approaches his illustration work with the instinct of a true comic book artist — attuned to the small details that give a character its narrative spark. Born in Pittsburgh and raised in the East Hills, he brings his observational curiosity to everything he creates.

Whether creating team portraits fort the Arts Council, merch and fliers for his baseball team (shout out to the Pounders / @pounderspgh) or fantastical worlds to hold his captivating characters, Camden's work is delightfully dialed in.

A highlight was getting to share the mic with attendees for community announcements---free retro furniture available, collaboration requests, upcoming exhibits to check out, open applications for @girlsrockpittsburgh and @handmadearcade, etc. We always love hearing directly from you!

April 7the Shred Your Fears workshop was extra special as we returned to our (pre-Covid) roots, creating time for connection, community, and coffee ☕️ 😉. We heard from inspiring speakers @angiemehlhorn_hairandmakeup and @trashyleesuh who shared insights into how they have overcome personal and professional obstacles and fears.

We released fear through stretching and meditation to prepare our bodies for skateboarding and then got to the main event! We hope you will join us for our next workshop on Sunday, June 2 from 11a-2p at @switchandsignalskatepark to try something new. Who knows, it might be just the thing you were looking for. #linkinbio

The Calvacade Ladies celebrating Joe. Never underestimate the power of teachers or the ability of me and Lisa to say inappropriate things in front of nuns. Thanks for capturing the footage, Kari. #literaryladies #genx #pointparkcollege

Point Park helped to give birth to the person I would eventually become. I am so damn lucky to know so many of these folks and especially to have the opportunity to celebrate Joe Knupsky’s 70th birthday this evening. As the adviser to the literary magazine at Point Park College, he gave @trashyleesuh and me a safe space and the opportunity to uncover our very unvarnished talents in graphics and poetry. He allowed us to try lots of new creative things, sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn’t. I am so grateful for being a small part of your orbit. Thank you for my first 10,000 hours, too many cigarettes, and everything else. Happy birthday, Joe!
