With deep sadness, we announce the death of Benny Erez, ECO’s former Director of Urban Agriculture and Compost Guru. Benny was a pillar that built and nurtured ECO City Farms to what it is today. We send condolences and love to Jackie, Benny’s wife, and their family.

Here are words from the people he worked closely with:

Margaret Morgan-Hubbard, ECO founder and executive director:
My family referred to him as "my work husband.” Our skills and temperaments complemented one another. Together, we dreamt up many ideas and projects…and made them happen. After he retired, I received a call from Benny: “Margaret! I just heard from 23&Me that you and I are related!" I told my family and co-workers. "Of course,” they said. “You don’t need DNA testing to discover that! We knew it all along!” Benny was one of a kind, but he was also a man of the people, and showed us all what we could be, do, and become.

Thomas Fazio, ECO Farm/Compost Manager:
He was bursting from the seams with a rare combination of wisdom, guidance and humility. I was interested in agriculture, but had no experience in it. I was starting to become involved with composting, but had never made a compost pile. He could see my interest, and he harnessed it, and molded me into the person I am today. There is no doubt that I would not have the career I have now without Benny. I will really miss him.

Viviana Lindo, Board Member and former ECO Director of Community Education:
We shared many moments over good coffee at Vigilante, a tradition we continued even after I had children. It was very hard for me when he moved to North Carolina. In February last year, I was able to take him to my hometown in the Andes of Peru. He embraced it all—trying new foods and showing genuine excitement for everything he encountered as we traveled from Lima to Huancayo. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, including my children, for whom he became a surrogate grandfather.

“Every part of him was as good as gold. I miss you, Benny.” — Yanay, 10

“Benny was very hopeful and full of belief. I miss him to infinity.” — Amaru, 7
