Native plant garden (swip to see progress) 😆 🌱

•••

Designed this garden using only plants native to Maryland. The idea was to have evergreen phlox provide a natural border and sedge grass give evergreen substance in the middle of the garden. In the back towards to wall summer blooms like butterfly weed, misflower, joepye and swamp rose mallow rise will eventually become the stars of the show. While blue eyed grass and zizia provide spring charm.

My first time applying these concepts to something I have designed. Ive worked on many gardens designed by talented people and have drawn inspiration from them all. Super cool to see a complete transformation of a space from weeds to thriving natural greenery. by @tree_faz

Raised garden bed install from last year 🪵🌱🍅

•••

I built these 11 raised beds with untreated oak boards for a client in Suitland, MD last year. The scope of work required the beds to be built to custom specs in order to maximize the growing space. this client wants to turn her yard into a microfarm so every inch counts! Once the beds were built, I filled them with a custom soil blend consisting of only natural organic inputs including worm castings from @ecocityfarms

If you or a loved one is suffering from a lack of fresh healthy veggies or bright beautiful flowers in your garden hit me up! Happy to come by and assess what is possible in your growing space. No project too big or too small!

Microbe Sauna! 🧪🤯 🪄

•••

Hard to believe we had to cool down some compost piles today. A couple piles were over 160 degrees even though we’ve had almost a week straight of freezing temps. Although you want your compost to heat up , the ideal range is between 120-160 for active composting (140 is the sweet spot). Once the pile gets hotter than 160 microbes start to die off and the decomposition process slows down. Adding air , removing material and mixing the pile can cool it down and get it back into that ideal temp range.

The reason these piles got extra hot is probably because of an incorrect Carbon to Nitrogen ratio resulting in a flurry of microbial growth and not enough carbon to balance and keep the pile within the ideal temp range.

The power of these microbes never ceases to amaze me. Science is 🆒. Science is 👍🏼

New raised bed install 🪵 🔨 🍅 (swipe to see the progress)

•••

First time using natural oak boards for raised beds. Found the oak very nice to work with although a lot heavier than the pine I would usually use! The density I’m sure is what makes it more rot resistant and therefore able to be used without chemical treatment.
