#mindfulmonday

‘’Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.”

What is your comfort book?

Today’s post is inspired by @booktris and her #greenstackformentalhealth October is Mental Health Awareness Month and she has asked people to post mental health book recommendations and green stacks. Check out her post.
I did not buy a self care book until my 50s and my mental health came very low in my priorities for most of my life. I went through redundancy and decided I would accept the offer of counselling because I was angry and it was free. The lady was lovely and I enjoyed the journalling but i was still angry. After suffering a mini stroke I attended cbt sessions. The 6 sessions were 30 minutes each. So many awful things were going on at this point 30 minutes didn’t really hit the spot.
Since then I have paid more attention to my mental health and self care books feature more prominently on my shelves. Here are some favourites-

Narnia series by C.S.Lewis - because to cope with this world I need my imagination to fly to another one.

Mary Oliver - Mary Oliver has helped me to find the connection and peace of nature.. the peace of words.

Enchantment - this was a revelation. The lovely @_the_book_bug_ gifted me a copy of WIntering and I have saved it to take me through winter.

A Manual for Being Human - so many things make better sense to me about myself and what I can do in future to make being a human a bit easier. The book is full of mindfulness exercises and techniques.

Tree Glee - This book looks at many aspects of trees including their impact on mental health and includes mindful activities like writing tree poetry, forest bathing.

Rise and Thrive For a Positive Mindset - this is full of inspirational quotes and helps me start each day positively

How to be Hopeful by @bernadetterussell - subtitled ‘Your Toolkit to Rediscover Hope and Help Create a Kinder World.’ I think hope is the magic that we all need, it is the light that keeps us moving forwards. This book is full of inspiration. I don’t know how to live without hope so this book is closest to my heart.

Wishing you a mindfulmonday 🌱

I'm devastated to hear that the famous ancient beautiful tree at Sycamore Gap next to Hadrian's Wall has been deliberately cut down.

This is a mindless act of harm against nature and community. This precious icon can never be replaced. The wildlife and micro-species that the tree held within itself and supported on its bark, amongst its leaves and within the soil are also lost.

I feel so grateful to have shared some moments with this beauty.

Trees are vital living organisms that we need on planet earth. I call them friends with benefits.

Children & adults are spending less and less time outdoors, and with nature. This leads to a sad disconnect from the very thing we all need to survive. Every mouth of food we eat every drop of water we drink, every gulp of air we breathe..

In my book Walk Yourself Happy I dedicated pages to the beauty and wonder of trees, and why they're so important in our lives.
@drsuzannesimard was instrumental in the discovery that trees 'talk to each other' - communicating through mycorrhizal networks. Trees supply many of our modern medicines and cool down the planet, while filtering the air. They are friends with benefits.

@nationaltrust said it was "shocked and saddened" by the felling of the tree ( voted English Tree of the Year in 2016 in the Woodland Trust's awards.)
