On #EarthDay I'm celebrating this - my dream tree - A majestic Magnolia, which is responsible for whispering to me that we choose this house to live in. This Magnolia made me audibly gasp as I was viewing said house, such is her outrageous beauty, but there was another reason for my enchantment. I have a deep bond to Magnolia trees, since there was one outside my childhood bedroom window from the age of 4 to 24, and now this one flourishes outside my bedroom window in the afternoon of my life.

I'm grateful to get to marvel at this exceptional Magnolia every day from early March to mid-April, as this is the first tree to blossom in the garden. I notice it changing every day, I notice how fleetingly it blossoms before the petals fall to the ground. I enjoy sweeping them up and making 'gingery' spice by drying and grounding them. Then, while the apple and cherry blossoms take over from Magnolia as Spring's delicious eye-candy, my awe continues as the green leaves spread across a blue sky and make my heart sing.

As her floral display comes to an end, I wanted to share some photos I've captured since before Spring sprung, along with an invitation.

In my book, TREE GLEE, as well as exploring the scientific evidence around how and why trees make us feel better, I invite people to think back on their lives and the trees that have surrounded them and mattered to them. These silent supportive treasures have grown alongside us our whole lives. So, on this #earthday2026 I invite you to devote some time to considering your own 'tree story' and remembering those trees that you've grown up with. Feel free to share your tree memories below, I'd love to hear them 💚🌳🙏 by @treeglee

“We have never needed to reconnect with nature more than we do today. By staying in we’re missing out. In our head-down world, it has become more critical than ever before to look up, pay attention to the natural world and allow ourselves to be nurtured by nature”, says best-selling author Cheryl Rickman in her book Tree Glee: How and Why Trees Make Us Feel Better.

It is a sentiment echoed by The Wildlife Trusts, a federation of 46 independent wildlife conservation charities covering the whole of the UK, who are inviting people to take part in their 30 Days Wild challenge. In a nutshell, it involves doing something that increases feelings of connectedness with the natural world on each and every day in June.

“It does my head and heart good to be with trees. Whenever I walk in woodland I feel at home; my heart expands, my mind lights up and my whole body relaxes. These rooted marvels are my serenity space and sanctuary; trees are my temple, and the forest is my church.”
Cheryl Rickman – Tree Glee: How and Why Trees Make Us Feel Better

Being around and among trees inspires me creatively, lifts me mentally and soothes me emotionally. And I’m not alone in my arboreal admiration. People LOVE trees! Hardly surprising, given we were forest-dwellers and hunter-gatherers long before life became more urban. Feeling connected to the natural world is deeply rooted within our genetic make-up.

Trees and wellbeing are intrinsically linked and I loved researching to uncover the healing power of trees in providing both prevention and cure to boost mental recovery and wellness and restore attention and concentration.

In my book Tree Glee, I wrote about what trees have meant to me throughout my life from childhood tree-climber and grieving teen, to wellbeing practitioner and woodlander. I wrote about how we can grow the six branches of wellbeing and what we can learn from trees, how we can better connect with them and how we can reciprocate to give back to them.

I dug deeper into the tree myths and legends of our cultural histories, uncovered ancestral beliefs about trees as protectors and discovered some remarkable tree tales.

This book is part ode and love letter to trees, part practical wellbeing guide and nature-connection manual and part call to action; a book about how trees positively impact our mental and physical health, kindly endorsed by Dr Jane Goodall, Dame Joanna Lumley and Alan Titchmarsh MBE.

It's #EARTHDAY today! 🌳🌍 I may not have posted recently on @treeglee but my appreciation for and connection to trees has not diminished (as you'll see on @wellbeingauthor where I've been a little more active). Because, as long as we take care of them - TREES ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR US - available, accessible and lovable.

As I write in my book: TREE GLEE: How and why trees make us feel better:

"To rekindle our relationship with trees and begin to care as much for them as we do for ourselves, we need to amplify our appreciation and respect for them to deepen our connection to them. As explorer and conservationist Jacques Cousteau said, "You can't save what you don't love, and you can't love what you don't know."

TREE GLEE is therefore part ode and love letter to trees, part practical wellbeing and nature-connection manual and part call to action.

To reflect this, I organised the book into three key parts:

1. APPRECIATION
2. CONNECTION
3. RECIPROCATION

Because the deeper we connect with trees, both through physical closeness to them and by gaining a deeper understanding of them through science and story, the more inclined we will be to gratefully give back to them and commit to protecting them.

If you'd like to learn more about how and why trees can make you feel better, please check out treeglee.co.uk and grab your copy of the book that I poured my heart and soul right in to - for the love of trees.

We have become intrinsically indoor people. So much so, that in the year 2000, human beings officially became an urban species, with almost 4 billion people living in cities, and that number projected by the UN to rise to 75 per cent of the global population by 2050.

We currently spend between 90 and 93 per cent of our time indoors (and 6 per cent of that time inside cars), and spend more time on screens than we spend sleeping, glued to our devices for between eight and eleven hours each day, according to UK communications regulator Ofcom.

Stress has been deemed the health epidemic of the 21st century by the World Health Organization. And, while time spent outdoors is on the decrease, anxiety, depression and other mental health illnesses are on the increase; a link we can surely no longer ignore.

Evidently, this divorce from nature comes at a pivotal time – we have never needed to reconnect with nature more than we do today. By staying in we’re missing out. In our head-down world, it has become more critical than ever before to look up, pay attention to the natural world and allow ourselves to be nurtured by nature.

Find out how and why trees make us feel better and what you can do TODAY for your mental health to benefit from trees in TREE GLEE: How and why trees make us feel better (link in bio).

Paid a visit to my favourite ancient #horsechestnuttree as the sun went down last nighr.

The sheep have been moved on from the parkland so I get to sit under the big boughs again. Yay! 💚

Woohoo! Excited to announce I'm giving a tree glee & flourish workshop (and floating meditation sessions) at @wellbeingbythelakes festival in September and, from 9am this morning, you can now book to secure your spots on the workshops from Thurs 7th- Sun 10th.

The festival takes place in the most beautiful setting at @sculpturebythelakes in Dorset. There's gong baths, forest sound experiences, yoga workshops, wellbeing workshops and insightful talks on the Riverside stage where I launched @treeglee to the world last year.

🌟🌳I'll be there on Saturday 9th September to give a TREE GLEE & FLOURISH WORKSHOP in the outdoor setting and will also be running the last two FLOATING MEDITATION sessions of the day.

The Tree Glee and Flourish Workshop is part Forest-Bathing experience, part creative journaling/sketching, during this workshop you’ll deepen your connection with nature, tap into your ancestral memory and reflect on your own personal ‘treestory’. You’ll breathe with a tree, go on a sensory treasure hunt and learn about the six branches of wellbeing. You’ll leave feeling calm and comforted, with a renewed sense of appreciation for trees and how/why they make us feel better..💚

Visit https://www.wellbeingbythelakes.co.uk/saturday-2023 to book a spot on my workshop or https://www.wellbeingbythelakes.co.uk/ to check out what's on offer on the other days. It's going to be AMAZING! by @treeglee
