Great educational morning at Trees Impact 🧑‍🏫

We believe it’s absolutely critical that all our trees/ shrubs are grown to the best standard possible.

Implementing the Australian Standard to Middlemist is going to be a vital part of our business plan moving forward to ensure both customer and supplier receive the best stock possible.

Looking back to see how far we have come is humbling, we cannot wait for what the future brings ☺️

Meeting with a remarkable tree

January 22nd, 2014
Ficus rubiginosa planting

Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne

Can a single tree tell a story? Perhaps.

The addition of the undercroft galleries at Melbourne’s Shrine completed two further courtyards that bring light and access to the subterranean levels.

The southwest courtyard garden is dedicated to memorialising peacekeeping and armed conflict in the Pacific theatre.

Plantings reference the flora of the tropics, including Banyan trees, bamboo and kapok. A large fig from New Guinea, Ficus dammaropsis, hangs its huge foliage amongst emergent palms and climbers.

The largest tree is a Port Jackson Fig, Ficus rubiginosa. Originally planted as a damaged, multi-trunked veteran, the tree brought immediate scale and character to the design. Supplied by Trees Impact, the tree is planted in a large concrete ‘bath tub’ to restrain its roots, with walls extending down 1200mm.

Essentially a large scale bonsai, the tree has slowly spread and thickened to create a shade umbrella and focus for the garden.

Bridging its root zone are large concrete plinths, giving the appearance of foundations or remnants of larger structures. The concreters called them coffins.

Connected to other parts of the garden with old steel railway track and rusty pipes, creating edges, the plinths create a subtle sense of an infrastructure that doesn’t quite belong, for purposes not quite known.

- Inspired in part by a visit to Đền Ngọc Sơn, the Ngoc Son Temple, or Temple of the Jade Mountain in central Hanoi, where a singleton tree emerges over a rock mountain as shown in Image 2.

Tropic of Preston...feeling the heat?

Our studio garden is a courtyard facing north, surrounded on three sides by buildings and to the north by a high wall. It is shaded by the tall, two-level main house, which gives welcome relief on hot days. A small pool creates an open centre within a series of grey slate terraces and levels in red brick.

Without a design, we started to plant afresh, starting with a Ficus platypoda, landed on site with a nearby developer’s crane in Feb 2010. The Fig quickly added to the afternoon shade and was complemented with a Ceiba speciosa. Around this time we also planted Ghost Bamboo, Dendrocalamus minor var amoenus along the house wall and Ficus dammaropsis from PNG. There are bananas too, which have provided edible fruit.

In the shade of the house, ferns, cycads and other lush evergreens form understorey, while huge Asplenium ferns grow from small containers, away from tree roots. Monstera deliciosa competes here for light and space, along with a large Lepidozamia peroffskyana.

Out in the western sun, a clump of Opuntia ‘Burbank Spineless’ sets the scene, supported by a now recumbent Tree Aloe, Aloidendron barbarae, and a collection of smaller plants in pots. Here are also found large containers of Tipuana tipu, and the large leaved Colocasia gigantea, near the bananas.

If this garden was ever designed, it was not on paper. The drawing shown here was made recently, a record of what has happened, rather than a prediction of what must occur. There is little ‘space’ at all- just a few gaps between plants. For us, the modern movement in gardens, epitomised by the ‘Gardens are for People’ approach led by Thomas Church, has left a legacy of garden thinking focussed on shaping voids, the empty spaces where little is allowed to grow. The garden shown here reverses those ideas, filling spaces with plants and placing people at their edges.

Thanks to @landscapeau for the recent feature on this garden.

SPEAKING OF BIODIVERSITY…close to 4000 plants were carefully procured to fit these voluptuous curves + the other planters, green roof areas and pots to the upper levels of the development.

This curvaceous, multi-tiered easterly terrace forms a ‘bushland buffer’ to an area of adjoining native bush. As such, the palette was heavily driven by Lane Cove Council’s local plant species list.

Key to us getting exactly wanted in terms of species and size was us, as Landscape Architects procuring the plants rather than having this role delegated to the builder or landscape contractor.

The second critical factor was us working with local growers for over a year out from the install date on growing up and caring for our precious green friends. Thanks to @sydneywildflowernursery & @treesimpact for facilitating this relationship and keeping calm when inevitably timings shifted and changed.

At the other end of the process, big high 5s to @leathwood_au for your patience + care with the install. We look forward to working with you on the ongoing tweaks to the maintenance of this creation over the coming year.

16 squares in one

Dandenong Civic Square is a square of many pieces.

The plan shows the convivial energy of multiple smaller spaces coinciding around a central carpet, each creating social friction- one to the next. This design strategy starts to create a ‘culture of congestion,’ following Rem Koolhaas.

In this vision of the city, congestion creates a collision between cultures and ideas, fostering unique forms of urban life – and architecture.

Just as the civic building is an assemblage of histories, aspirations, tracings and quotations, the civic square also proposes a setting for urban life that starts with many stories.

Elevated high above Lonsdale Street, the square has become a big civic terrace, a colourful democratic tableau of diversity that is life in modern Australia.
