✨ 영화 ‘나무는 기억한다(The Trees Remember)’ 구요셉(Joseph Ku) 감독 “광활한 캐나다의 설원, 그곳에서 피어난 1905년 한국 독립군의 아리아” 인적이 끊긴 캐나다 밴쿠버(Vancouver)의 거대한 얼음 호수, 사방을 에워싼 설산 사이로 매서운 칼바람이 몰아친다. 문명과 수 시간 떨어진 영하의 고립무원 속에서 카메라 뷰파인더를 응시하는 한 젊은 한인 감독이 있다. 구요셉(Joseph Ku) 감독. 그는 왜 이 이국땅의 혹독한 겨울 속으로 뛰어들어 120여 년 전, 조국의 자유를 위해 이름 없이 쓰러져간 한국 독립군들의 서사를 꺼내 들었을까. 할아버지의 참전 사실을 너무 늦게 알게 된 한 청년의 아쉬움에서 출발한 이 여정은, 이제 국적과 인종을 초월한 20명의 크루가 함께 달리는 거대한 모험이 되었다. 세계무대로의 도약을 준비 중인 구요셉(Joseph Ku) 감독에게서 자유와 희망의 메시지를 들어보았다. Q. 캐나다 밴쿠버(Vancouver)에서 ‘한국 독립군’의 이야기를 영화로 제작하게 된 특별한 계기가 있으신가요? 타국에서의 성장 과정부터 이 서사를 꺼내 들게 되기까지 배경이 궁금합니다.
