Grab a seat. We’ll zoom out from here.

This home sits on the high-line of the South Hills, with a wall of Sierra Pacific windows taking in some of the best views in the Missoula Valley.

From the University of Montana to Ch-paa-qn Peak, there’s a whole lot of Missoula to look at from up here.

Morning coffee, sunset cocktail, or a few quiet minutes somewhere in between. This is a pretty good spot to drink it all in.

Phoenix, created during my artist residency in Jingdezhen, China, is an assemblage of found ceramic-related materials, a saggar, kiln elements, bricks and a pallet, combined with one of the first clay seeds I made during the residency, which exploded in the public kiln. At the time, I felt deeply ashamed, worried that I had ruined other people’s work. Rather than discarding it, I kept the fragment, allowing it to become part of this piece.

As someone whose practice is rooted in responding to specific places, I initially found Jingdezhen’s cultural context both inspiring and challenging. Living outside my country of origin has made questions of belonging central to my work, and this experience brought them to the surface once again. Yet the openness and curiosity I encountered, together with the shared importance of family and food, revealed unexpected affinities between Chinese and Italian culture.

Phoenix inhabits the space between difference and recognition. It reflects on how encounters with unfamiliar realities can transform not only our understanding of a place, but also of ourselves.

If you’re in Jingdezhen, Resonance is open until the end of July. There’s still time to visit the exhibition and experience in person the incredible work of all the artists before it closes.
