I was honoured to be able to watch an early screener of the documentary “KIKUYU LAND,” revealing Kenya’s dark history of tea land exploitation, stolen land, and sexual violence of the managers, the ‘Overseer Class’ given impunity by the multinational corporations who own them.

I also had the pleasure to interview Andrew H Brown, who co-directed with Bea Wangondu, for my podcast, Tiny Pod Big Impact, where I got to ask some of my many questions and explore his approach to cinema veritas filmmaking. A truly thought provoking conversation and an equally inspiring film.

Bea Wangondu both co-directs and steps in front of the camera to explore her own family history. Generational cycles of extraction, exploitation and oppression continue to this day, leaving the film open ended and unresolved, while also adding to the records of history by sharing these deeply moving personal histories and silenced voices.

The film exposes how British colonial land seizures between 1895 and 1963 displaced indigenous communities from fertile ancestral soils to build massive, highly profitable tea plantations currently run by global multinational conglomerates.

Set in Kenya’s tea highlands, “KIKUYU LAND” follows Mr. Mungai as he pursues restitution for land taken from his family. What begins as a personal battle soon reveals a deeper web of historical erasure and the enduring legacy of colonial dispossession that continues to reverberate across generations.

“KIKUYU LAND” spans history, politics, silenced voices, colonialism, corruption, power, profit, inheritance and oppression.

“KIKUYU LAND” had its World Premiere at Sundance Film Festival, and is released in cinemas throughout the UK on 2nd October 2026.

A beautiful, moving, challenging film that remains with you long after the credits roll.
