The seeds of Ozempic and Oxys were sewn in coca

Despite being chewed by inhabitants of the Andes for roughly 8,000 years, it wasn’t until 1855 that coca’s key active alkaloid, cocaine, was successfully isolated from the leaf by a German chemist named Friedrich Gaedcke.

For 30 years cocaine’s true medical purpose would remain undiscovered, and it needed someone to help find its feet in a growing marketplace.

Enter pharmaceutical company Parke-Davis and particularly its charismatic co-owner George Davis to turn up the Hype – and take it to the masses, via a young doctor called Sigmund Freud.

Swipe 👉 to read how the then-legal cocaine was marketed in the late 19th-century, creating a blueprint that Big Pharma has mined since. I’m beaming with pride and joy as I look at this cover, and think about all the hard work that led to bringing @thetripreportreport into the world.

The show, which explores drug history and culture through the lens of first person experience reports, was born out of my dear friend and Co-host Kai’s desire to listen to such a podcast. Tried though they did, they couldn’t find one and had the inspired idea to make it ourselves.

If your interest is peaked, I implore you to check out the show on your app of choice, and if you want it to succeed please subscribe and review so we can do more of this work we so deeply enjoy <3

Kai and I have been making our own fun for a long time, but this began a new chapter for us as Content Creators, a term I both abhor and now embrace.

Kai is among the most caring and capable people I’ve ever met. Watching them set their mind to something and make it happen over and over through out our relationship has been a gift, and often pushed me to do the same.

Through their keen eye for after hours I’ve gotten to know my own city in a new way these last 5 years, and grown proud of the freaks and weird0s working hard to make magic happen from 10-4 almost every night.

Since we’ve met I’ve had a tendency to prioritize caring for those other than myself, which feels good until I reach a point of internal depletion, and don’t have any juice left to chase my own dreams. Without Kai reminding me that I deserve some of my own care too, it would have taken me a lot longer to believe it, and thus be here today sharing such a big step.

I’m endlessly grateful for their friendship, their support, and our shared obsession for the myriad of scenes that make up counterculture, without which this show, this studio, and this embodied version of myself would not be possible.

This is only the beginning, and I have no doubt there is much more to come 💫
