A two-part investigation into the Electro resurgence and its Electroclash labeling + I Was an Electro Malcontent, Ghostly in the mix and stolen moments from @trevorjacksonofficial, @tromano_writer, @thejuanmaclean, @galkin.jonathan, @bougie, @jacquesrenault, @deathinvegasmusic, and more.

The interest in '80s sounds, spikier analogue sound design, and genre-mashing was a globally diverse 90s movement which crested into something that for a brief moment held music in a headlock, leading to some exciting characters, many only getting their rightful appreciation now. The colorful heat poured on a dour techno scene was a brief blip but would have influence felt now in the hands of art-forward pop.

It’s almost that "Electroclash" has been more useful as a phantom genre or historical record than in its own moment, one which threatened to flatten the underground into pastiche.

As a DJ moment it was sublime, just at the dawn of mashup, anything goes. The real heroes of the era, along with the DJs, were the dancers, the promoters; and women who sang the songs.

More on this in the post.

Ahead of tuesday night's Q&A after Italo Disco Legacy, figured it would be fun—and self-indulgent—to revisit Tricia Romano's profile of me for the Village Voice from January 2005. Titled "Italo Don", subtitled "DJ Dan Selzer of NYHappenings reveals his dark secrets." Featuring a photo of me taken at Bar 13 with the caption "Selzer: More gay Italian shit".

This was when nyhappenings only had 3,000 subscribers, not the 7,000 it had at it's peak.

When Tricia asked me "What do you think you are most known for?" I answered "Getting post-punk hipsters into italo-disco." That was 21 years ago. And I'm still at it.
