TOMORROW:

I'll be in Olympia for a Q&A after a screening of "The Last Critic," the documentary about Robert Christgau — the self-proclaimed "Dean of American rock critics." The film, directed by Matty Wishnow, premiered at SXSW in March where it won the Special Jury Award, and has since drawn raves from Variety and Rolling Stone.

The film has many of the Village Voice family, including Ann Powers, Joe Levy, Nelson George, Colson Whitehead, and yours truly.

Screening 1pm at Capitol Theater as part of the Olympia Film Festival.

It's not often that a person lives long enough to see the world pay tribute to them. But Robert Christgau, the Dean of Rock Critics, now 84, has an entire movie dedicated to him. The documentary, The Last Critic @thelastcriticfilm, by Matty Wishnow screens on Sunday 1 p.m. at the @olympiafilmsociety festival.

It is a funny, touching, and moving tribute to a complicated man whose work has had a profound effect on music criticism in particular, and criticism as an art form in general. While everyone has an opinion, most people's opinions are not nearly as well-informed, articulately written, or as funny and insightful as Bob's thousands (literally thousands) of record reviews he's written over the decades.

I proud that one of my lines in the film is calling the Village Voice, "the greatest newspaper that ever fucking existed." The other is me dissing The New Times, the barbarians who destroyed the paper.

I'll be conducting a Q & A after the screening with the director and signing copies of The Freaks Came Out to Write. Come down if you love music, writing, and pine for the days when being an intellectual was something to aspire to, not sneer at.

This weekend “The Last Critic” is off to the coasts! That’s right—screenings in New England @iffboston @sommerville_theatre on Saturday, April 25 at 1230pm and then in the Pacific Northwest @olympiafilmsociety @olympiafilmfestival on Sunday, April 26 at 1pm at the Capitol Theater.

In Boston @realjoelevy will be attending for a post-screening Q&A (Joe has amazing stories & Bob/Voice/Rock Crit knowledge so attend if at all possible). In Olympia, Director Matty Wishnow & @tromano_writer (Author of “The Freaks Come Out to Write”—the positively essential oral history of The Village Voice) will also be joining for a post-screening Q&A. Come say “hello.”
