LGBTQ people stand to benefit hugely from psychedelic therapy. Treatment spaces have some changes to make.

In LGBTQ communities, incidents of depression, anxiety, and addiction are far higher than in the larger population. In the U.S., LGBTQ youth are five times more likely to attempt suicide.

Microdosing is the practice of regularly taking a drastically small amount of a drug to test or benefit from its physiological effect. It has been acclaimed by some as a cure for many different conditions, including ADHD, depression and anxiety.

Like all forms of treatment, psychedelic substances should be seen as a piece of the overall healing puzzle -- not a magic pill to solves all problems.

Holistic practices to achieve optimal wellbeing can also include: breathwork, movement, creative activities, community, and service to others.

Creating safe spaces in which queer people can take psychedelics, and opening doors to once-hostile medical institutions, could help to heal the decades-long trauma of these communities.

*NOTE: LSD is measured in micrograms and is abbreviated ‘µg,’ not ‘mg’ as written on slide 3.

What happens when you take psychedlics therapy? And why is this relevant to society at large and specifically the queer community?

Therapeutic doses of psychedelics can dissolve bad belief like “being queer is bad”, allowing you to experience what life is like without these limiting beliefs. Often, below these beliefs is an overwhelming feeling of self-love. In fact, psychedelics promote neurogenesis, or the creation of new neural pathways in the brain. When done in a safe set and setting, this can literally re-wire your brain, replacing beliefs of “not fitting in” with a knowing that “I am enough”.

A shared experience of many in the queer community is phase of feeling like you didn’t fit in because of who you are, maybe being bullied, or generally feeling “othered.” Even if you have outwardly progressed past this phase of your life, the reality is that many of these beliefs may still subconsciously exist under the surface, leading to greater transformation and healing.

All of this said, psychedelics are not a panacea, and can be dangerous depending on your health history and current medications, or if done outside of a safe, intentional setting. In addition, psychedelics are illegal in many places. This information is not an endorsement of psychedelics or an encouragement to engage in any illegal activity, but rather as a resource for you to learn more.
