Fall is finally here, and I'm so ready for evenings spent outside by the fire!

I love designing outdoor living spaces that feel like a natural extension of the home. Comfortable seating, a fireplace, and a place to gather with family and friends can make these spaces just as inviting as the rooms inside.

Remember the "dog bar" I've been talking about for months? 🐾

Well, here's a little peek at the finished space!

What was once a wet bar that my clients never used is now a dedicated space for their four-legged family members, complete with a permanent water bowl, feeding area, treats, and storage for all the dog essentials.

And we had to have a little fun with the design! I absolutely love this playful wallpaper paired with the traditional artwork.

I can't wait to show you the rest of this little space that serves a big purpose for this family!

What does it really mean for a home to be functional?

It's a word we use all the time in design, but I don't think it means the same thing for every home or every family.

A kitchen that works beautifully for a couple who loves to entertain may look very different from one designed for a family with four young children.

A living room where everyone gathers to watch movies has different needs than one where you love to sit with a book or visit with friends.

Neither is better than the other. They're simply designed around different ways of living.

That's why I spend so much time getting to know my clients before we start designing. I want to understand what everyday life looks like in their home, what's working, what isn't, and what would make it better.

For me, designing a functional home is about creating spaces that work seamlessly for the people who actually live in them.

And yes, we will also make it beautiful!

Working on a new home office design this week reminded me of the home office in this past project, and how much I truly love the finished space.

We started with a wall of custom cabinetry designed around how the space needed to function, then brought in the darker finishes, lighting, furnishings, and details that gave the room its personality.

I love the balance of the rich, dark cabinetry with the warmth of the wood floors, leather, and brass. The finished space feels sophisticated, but still comfortable and inviting.

Swipe through to see how it all came together!

The best thing in a vintage shop is never the thing you walked in for.

Our Denver pick: @repertoire.den on South Broadway. “Repertoire is one of those shops where you want to look at everything.” Amanda has an eye for the special and the unexpected, and being in the room is half of it. Vintage and new, for the most discerning eye. Open Wednesday through Saturday 11 to 7, Sunday 11 to 5.

Six more our editors send people to. Swipe through:

@namedroppers, Salt Lake City
@greenbutterflyatelier, Ridgeland
@perennial.west, Jackson
@moss_sanantonio, San Antonio

One of my favorite things about design is that a home doesn't have to fit neatly into one particular style.
Most people don't live that way anyway.
.
You may love something traditional and also be drawn to something more modern. You may want rooms that feel quiet and collected, but still want a little color or something unexpected.
.
The goal is not to give all of that a certain label.
The goal is to understand what you're drawn to, what feels right in your home, and how all of those things can work together in a way that feels like you.
.
That's much more interesting to me than designing a house that perfectly fits into a certain category.

Proof that the guest bath deserves good art, too.
A small space is the perfect place to do something beautiful and unexpected. Art turns a functional room into a finished one—and no wall is too small to make an impact. ✨
