“BURY THE KEY” OUT NOW 🗝️

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

ONE MONTH AWAY 📅 Montreal synth-popster @marciii (of @tttopsss)🔥 Fri Nov 20 @27club_ottawa 🎟️ spectrasonic.com & @vertigoottawa

presented with the support of @ontariocreates & @btpbrewing

When we last heard from Marci aka Marta Cikojevic, she was dancing the pain away on 2022’s Marci. A longtime member of Montreal soft-rock group TOPS, Marci established Cikojevic as a solo artist with an intuitive understanding of pop as a vehicle for emotional catharsis. Four years later, Cikojevic returns with Mask Lady and Late Night Girl, a record of party girl anthems for when the party is over, delivered with love and compassion for the good times and great memories.

we're getting the old crowd back together. comment "RSVP" and i'll send you the official reunion invite.

ceremony room grand opening at matchabar, williamsburg, october 18, 2014

matchabar had opened about a month earlier: new york's first matcha cafe, brothers max & graham fortgang at 93 wythe, graham 22 and max 24 at the time, the matcha stone-ground on a fifth-generation family farm in nishio, japan. ceremony room was their saturday night alter-ego, a 50-75 person speakeasy behind closed curtains with a back line, dj booth and a small dance floor.

the grand opening had live sets from cibo matto and tops, matt fx (scooter island, then the music supervisor on broad city) on the decks, and beer, wine, sake and of course matcha at the bar. the party fliers were made out of old floppy disks.

The brothers Fortgang are the proprietors of this establishment. And very nice dudes. Graham is significantly younger than me — and one of those people that made me think "the kids are actually alright"

There is a quirky thread to the music of TOPS, where the band's dream pop tones meet indie rock forms with an atmospheric twist and a bit of an '80s inspiration.

Geese played their first UK show in the Basement. Wet Leg packed out the Pink Room. The Last Dinner Party were still called The Dinner Party.

Bill Ryder-Jones was heartbreaking and very funny, TOPS brought the immaculate pop, and Night Shop showed he’s one of the best to ever do it.

Fontaines D.C. and Confidence Man got behind the decks, and Joy Orbison, salute and Danny L Harle gave us reason to stay out late.

11 years ago today, TOPS released “Anything”, still one of our absolute favourite songs from them.

It’s one of those TOPS tracks where everything feels effortless on the surface, even though the song itself is quietly devastating. Jane Penny described it as being about the anguish of suddenly not having beside you the things, or people, you once relied on. That feeling of not really knowing where the past ends and the absence begins is basically all over the song. There’s also something very Julee Cruise about it: that same soft-focus, nocturnal quality where everything sounds beautiful, distant and just slightly haunted.

For the worn and dreamy video, Jane and director Tommy Keith apparently went out just a couple of weeks before its release, found motorcycles belonging to complete strangers, and shot the whole thing that same night on a Hi8 camera. No giant production, no elaborate plan. Just Jane, motorcycles, darkness, smeared city lights and, for reasons nobody has ever properly explained, burning mannequins.

“Anything” also exists in a slightly strange place in the TOPS discography as it never appeared on a proper album, and was released between Picture You Staring and Sugar at the Gate. It was later paired with the also excellent “The Hollow Sound of the Morning Chimes” on a 7-inch.
