TOPS: Live From KCRW HQ ∞ Californians always see colorful Canadians pass through the Golden State around this time of year, replete with flashy colors and eye-catching movement. Of course, usually our Canadian tourists are the mighty monarch butterflies. This time, they’re Montreal indie group TOPS.

Chunky single-coil guitar and breathy vocals take center-stage for the veteran musicians’ session at KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio, where they deliver a melange of new releases and older selections (plus, as dessert, a close-out performance of their hit “Petals”). It can be difficult to describe what a band sounds like through words alone so, instead, I invite you to read into their behavior; it’s no coincidence that between songs you can catch the band smiling and waving at one another. Their positivity and can-do spirit can be categorized as highly-infectious, soothing, or even mind-altering. Let their music do the same as you sail through nearly 18 minutes of cool, fully-realized TOPS.
