@theauxevanston , a Black-owned wellness hub for businesses, marks its first anniversary in June. The space is still working to build foot traffic at its tucked-away Washington Street location, but with the building gearing up to reach full capacity of tenants for the first time, business owners say they’re optimistic about the coming year.

Nestled inside an alley entrance at 2223 Washington St., the 16,500-square-foot building now houses nearly 20 businesses and health services, including a laundromat cafe, a dance and workout studio, a Black-owned bookstore, therapy services and doulas.

Over the last year, The AUX has seen a “steady” uptick in foot traffic, mostly from events and visitors coming for appointments, said Tiffini Holmes, co-founder and owner of the @theauxwellnesscollective , a space in the building dedicated to mental and physical health services.

Holmes said in the last few months more people have heard of the space, but they are still trying to raise awareness of all of the different businesses.

“I definitely think the name is getting out more, and people understand that there’s this building here, and they want to see what it is, but they don’t understand the concept of multiple businesses operating here and what each business does,” Holmes said.

But because the building is slightly hidden, Holmes said it’s been challenging to get visitors to come in to explore the space if they don’t already know about it.

“I think foot traffic will always be an issue as far as new folks coming in, because we are not off a main thoroughfare, so the chances of you driving through here, you’re probably on your way to somewhere, and you’re not looking to be like, ‘Huh, what’s that?'” she said.

The owners have been working with marketing students at Northwestern University, and now they have hired a marketing consultant to lead the efforts to increase visibility, Holmes said.
