Entrepreneurship was at the heart of yesterday’s FEBE Alumni Roundtable Engagement! Game changers, innovators, trailblazers and opportunity creators! These are some of the faces of FEBE alumni who are not just making their mark in industry, but opening doors for others along the way. Meet Mpho Kgatla, a Metallurgical Engineering alumnus who has turned his industry knowledge into business opportunities through Mpho Kgatla Holdings, which he founded in 2019. Through his business ventures, including MK Refineries, which provides consulting services to mines and refineries across the country, Kgatla has helped create employment and opportunities for FEBE students and graduates to enter the mining sector. Originally from Bolobedu, Ga-Modjadji, in Limpopo, Kgatla holds qualifications in Metallurgical Engineering and Project Management and is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at TUT. His message at the roundtable was simple: There are opportunities in the mining sector, but we need to recognise the gaps and create opportunities where they don’t yet exist. For Kgatla, entrepreneurship is not just about building a successful business. It’s also about bringing others along and creating opportunities for young people to build their own futures. #beyondlimits #fromgood2great #alumni #tut

Another FEBE alumnus making his mark in industry! Meet Mike Mpia Makwanza, an Electrical Engineering alumnus and founder of Akumm Group, an engineering and technology company established in 2015. Speaking at yesterday’s FEBE Alumni Roundtable Engagement, Makwaza had plenty to say about the skills gap, unemployment and entrepreneurship. He believes TUT has a strong reputation for producing technically competent engineers. What many students and graduates lack, however, is not necessarily the skills, but the opportunity to put them to work. He shared how his own career took off while he was still a student. A company approached one of his lecturers seeking an affordable solution to an engineering challenge. Makwaza was given the opportunity to assist, and his work impressed the company enough to offer him a job in 2014. A year later, he took a leap into entrepreneurship, establishing Akumm Group after identifying a problem he believed his business could solve. Reflecting on South Africa’s unemployment challenges, Makwaza raised an important point: many graduates are turning to entrepreneurship because they cannot find jobs, rather than because they have identified a problem they want to solve. His message to students was to look beyond starting a business simply to earn a living. Look for problems, recognise opportunities and use your skills to develop solutions. For Makwaza, that first opportunity as a student made all the difference. And it is the kind of exposure he believes more young engineers need. #beyondlimits #fromgood2great #alumni #tut

Funding opportunities for entrepreneurs were also on the agenda at yesterday’s FEBE Alumni Roundtable Engagement. Mahlatse Mothapo, Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships and Customer Care Incentives at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), shed light on the financial and non-financial support available to entrepreneurs looking to start or grow their businesses. He outlined several funding opportunities, including the Black Industrialists Scheme, Manufacturing Support Programme, Agro-Processing Support Scheme and Automotive Investment Scheme. He also highlighted support for innovation, technology development and research partnerships between industry and universities. One of the key takeaways from his presentation was that the dtic offers non-repayable grants through qualifying funding programmes. However, accessing this support comes with conditions. Mothapo explained that businesses must demonstrate how their projects will contribute to the economy, whether through job creation, industrial growth or transformation. His presentation gave aspiring entrepreneurs and established business owners valuable insight into the funding opportunities available to help turn their ideas into viable businesses while contributing to South Africa’s economic development. #beyondlimits #fromgood2great

Shalate Davhana, Manager for Alumni Relations and Funding, encouraged FEBE alumni and industry partners to support TUT’s newly established Entrepreneurship Fund, aimed at helping aspiring student entrepreneurs turn their business ideas into reality. Speaking at the FEBE Alumni Roundtable Engagement, Davhana highlighted that many TUT students are already developing innovative products and business ideas but need support to take them further. While acknowledging the important role the Alumni Fund continues to play in assisting financially needy students, she encouraged alumni to also contribute towards the Entrepreneurship Fund. Davhana reminded alumni that giving back does not always have to be financial. Sharing their success stories is another way of inspiring students and showcasing the impact TUT graduates are making in various industries. She highlighted platforms such as the alumni newsletter, *Our Beat*, which profiles graduate success stories, as well as radio programmes including *Alumni Talk* on Tshwane FM 93.6 and *Plug a Graduate* on TUT FM 96.2. She said these platforms help celebrate alumni achievements, strengthen the University’s reputation and inspire current students by showing them what is possible beyond graduation. #beyondlimits #fromgood2great

FEBE Executive Dean, Prof Mxolisi Shongwe, welcomed alumni and industry partners to the Alumni Roundtable Engagement, recognising the many TUT graduates who have gone on to become industry leaders, CEOs, innovators and problem-solvers. In his opening address, Prof Shongwe reflected on the Faculty’s recent achievements, including its success in the Sasol Solar Challenge and Cars4Mars African Rover Challenge, before turning the conversation to the importance of stronger ties between academia and industry. He encouraged alumni to play an active role in shaping the next generation of engineers and built-environment professionals through mentorship, entrepreneurship opportunities, funding and curriculum development that responds to industry needs.
