Why Is This Basil Purple—and What Does It Mean for Farmers?

Purple basil gets its distinctive color mainly from anthocyanins, natural pigments that accumulate in the leaves. The amount and intensity of purple are strongly influenced by the plant’s genetics, so some basil varieties are naturally much darker than green basil.

💜 What causes the purple color?

* Genetics: Varieties such as Dark Opal and Red Rubin are bred to produce high levels of anthocyanins.
* Light: Good sunlight can promote stronger pigmentation in many purple basil varieties.
* Temperature and stress: Environmental conditions can influence pigment production and leaf coloration.
* Plant development: Young leaves may sometimes appear different in color from mature leaves.

🚜 What does it mean for farmers?

1. It creates a specialty crop.
Purple basil can stand out visually at farmers’ markets, restaurants, and retail outlets, giving growers another differentiated basil product.

2. Color can be a useful crop-quality signal—but not a simple health test.
A deep purple color does not automatically mean the plant is healthier. Pigmentation is primarily a varietal characteristic, although environmental conditions can modify it.

3. Light management matters. ☀️
Growers need appropriate light and temperature conditions to maintain good growth and desirable coloration.

4. Harvesting strategy matters. ✂️
Regular harvesting or pinching can encourage branching and continued production of young leaves, while allowing plants to flower changes where the plant directs its resources.

5. It can support pollinators when flowering. 🐝
If some plants are allowed to flower, basil can provide nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.

Tarragon Botrytis (Gray Mold)

Botrytis gray mold, mainly caused by Botrytis cinerea, is a fungal disease that can affect tarragon, particularly when conditions are cool, humid, and poorly ventilated.

🦠 How it develops

The fungus produces spores that can spread through air, splashing water, infected plant debris, and contact between plants. Wounds and damaged tissues are especially vulnerable.

🔍 Symptoms

* 🟤 Brown or water-soaked spots appear on leaves and stems.
* 🍂 Infected leaves may wilt, collapse, and die.
* 🌫️ A characteristic gray, fuzzy mold develops on infected tissue.
* 🌱 Young shoots and stems can become weakened or rot.
* Under severe conditions, the disease can spread rapidly through dense foliage.

💧 Conditions that favor Botrytis

Botrytis is more likely when there is:

* High humidity
* Poor air circulation
* Frequent overhead irrigation
* Wet foliage for long periods
* Dense plant growth
* Cool-to-moderate temperatures

🛡️ Prevention & management

The best strategy is to keep foliage dry and improve airflow.

✅ Water at the soil level rather than over the leaves
✅ Avoid overcrowding plants
✅ Improve greenhouse ventilation
✅ Remove infected leaves and plant debris
✅ Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can promote dense growth
✅ Keep harvested tarragon cool and dry
✅ Use locally registered fungicides when necessary and follow the label, especially because tarragon is an edible herb.

One thing about mixing somatic sensation, sound journeying, Earth medicines like herbs + crystals..
fully immersed in natural elements..
it's the perfect recipe to feel deep emotions🥲🌀🫁🍃🤍

contracting + expanding, just like our lungs do
when we breathe.

inevitable. Grief exists alongside love.
Pain exists alongside pleasure.
Anger exists alongside joy.

These are healing tools.

We're not meant to be controlled by them,
but we invite in disharmony if we ignore them.

They ask to be honored, not suppressed.

Healing work is real work.

And it's never done.

I found so much happy awe + wonder,
delightful splendor + fun
prancing around like a deer
in my element.

Wearing earth colors,
messy wild hair,
barefeet on the ground,
herbs all in + over my body,
tinctures + elixirs in my belly,
salves + oils + spritzes
all over my skin + hair.

the delicacy of gazing at nature's colors + lights
all around, just being consumed by it fully.

like a mushroom. or a flower.

I also finally felt enough safe space to dive deep
into emotions I didn't want to feel.

I found that my body was so depleted
I couldn't really dance.

So I sat and had tea in the garden,
getting lost in the music in the headphones.

I laid on the ground, hand on my womb + heart
until I found myself in intuitive yoga poses,
listening to the hymns of the sound healing.

&& I felt everything. in my heart. all at once.

I may not live within my past anymore,
but still must feel its lessons + grief
to always move forward,
always be in my humanity.

the power of somatic work.
descension.

Spirituality is not only ascension.
When we try to force it to be,
we begin bypassing what's real + raw.
which is a vital aspect of the human experience.

Driving home in a swirl of emotions,
I eventually had to pull over to let it out.

I passed a huge neon hot pink sign
that said "BIG feelings" in bold💖🤣

I pulled into the parking lot,
and I sobbed. I gave myself permission to release.
to feel confused. shocked. hurt. disappointed.
by everything that's broken my heart,
whether long ago or recently.

I will let go even more now.

I'll feel deeper joy tomorrow,
because I did this work.

Thank you @hv.ecstaticrhythms🦌🪷

Powdery Mildew — The White Disease Covering Squash Leaves

Powdery mildew is one of the most common fungal diseases affecting squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and other cucurbits. It is especially noticeable when the leaves suddenly look as if they have been dusted with flour.

🔍 What does it look like?

* White, powdery patches appear on the upper surface of leaves.
* The patches gradually expand and can cover much of the leaf.
* Leaves may turn yellow or brown and eventually dry out.
* Severe infection can reduce photosynthesis and weaken the plant.
* Fruit production and quality may decline when infection is severe.

🍃 What causes it?
Several powdery mildew fungi can infect squash. Unlike many other fungal diseases, powdery mildew doesn’t require free water on the leaf surface to infect. It can develop under warm conditions with relatively high humidity, especially when plants have poor air circulation.

⚠️ What increases the risk?

* Crowded plants
* Poor air circulation
* Shaded conditions
* Warm days and cool nights
* Excessive nitrogen that produces dense, tender foliage

🛡️ How can farmers manage it?

* Choose powdery-mildew-resistant squash varieties when available.
* Give plants enough spacing for good airflow.
* Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization.
* Monitor leaves regularly and act early when symptoms appear.
* Remove severely affected leaves where practical.
* If disease pressure is high, use a locally registered fungicide according to the label and crop-specific recommendations.
