CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS // Cardboard Castles & Castle Drawing

TUESDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2026
JAMFACTORY AT SEPPELTSFIELD

Step into a world of knights, dragons, and daring adventures as you create your very own miniature medieval castle!

Using recycled cardboard boxes, tubes, and a variety of textured papers and card, you'll design and build a unique fortress full of character. Artist Deb will provide all the materials, tools, glues, and the ever-popular Chomp Saw, making construction easy, safe, and fun.

Add towers, turrets, drawbridges, dragons, flags, and any other imaginative details you can dream up. At the end of the workshop, everyone's castles will come together to create one spectacular medieval kingdom.

Want to keep the adventure going? Book yourself into the following Castle Drawing Workshop, where your handcrafted castle becomes the inspiration for your own medieval masterpiece on paper.

Creativity meets conservation at the Hospital School 🌊🪼🎨

We recently supported students from the Hospital School at the WCH to take part in a two-day art and environmental workshop led by renowned community artist and educator, Deb Twining.

Through printmaking, painting and collage, students captured the beauty and fragility of the Great Southern Reef using recycled materials.

Together, they created a collaborative installation that offers a calming, reflective space for patients, families and staff, while connecting them with art and ocean conservation.

The completed collages are now on display in the Blue Gallery, located on the Ground Floor outside the Hospital School.

‘We Speak for the Seas’
an installation by young artists from TwiningArts Art School 🦭

Sustainability lies at the heart of this exhibition. Young artists have repurposed materials wherever possible. Printed sea creatures were created using recycled Tetra Pak milk cartons, scratched, torn, textured, inked and printed multiple times through the traditional intaglio process. Marine plants were formed from leftover paint, scraped across surfaces and collaged together. Completed works were mounted on reclaimed corflute signage, assembled into intricate underwater environments.

The exhibition invites audiences to slow down, to look closely, and to consider their role in safeguarding one of the world’s most delicate marine environments. We hope you enjoy our Great Southern Reef.

This exhibition is currently on display in the Blue Gallery at the WCH, located on the Ground Floor outside Hospital School.

We are thrilled to display a remarkable exhibition ‘We Speak for the Seas’, an installation created by young artists from TwiningArts Art School. This is a heartfelt response to the fragile beauty and current environmental issues of the Great Southern Reef.

Through printmaking, painting and collage, artists aged 5 to 21 celebrate and draw attention to the extraordinary biodiversity of this vast underwater ecosystem, a world of cool temperate kelp, seagrass forests and reef systems, alive with colour, movement and interdependence.

Over the last year, the reef in South Australian waters has suffered devasting damage from an unprecedented algal bloom, dramatically altering habitats and threatening countless marine species. Guided by curiosity, care and a strong sense of responsibility for the future, these young artists translate scientific realities into powerful visual narratives. Their work speaks to resilience and vulnerability, reminding us that the Great Southern Reef is neither distant nor abstract but a living system intimately connected to climate, community and culture.

Young people in the Adelaide Hills are using art to speak up for the Great Southern Reef. 80 students aged 5 to 21 from @twiningarts have created We Speak for the Seas, a large-scale 30 meter-long collaborative work that captures both their concern and their connection to the ocean. The project channels what many of them are feeling right now, care for marine life, frustration at what’s happening with the algal bloom, and a clear desire to protect it.

Built over several months, the installation brings together hand-printed sea creatures, kelp and seagrass using recycled materials, forming a single reef system shaped by many voices. The piece is a strong reminder that art can cut through and connect people to what matters. The exhibition is now on display at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, running until the end of May.

5 days of soaking in the generosity, knowledge and community brought by @australianceramicstriennale at Freemantle.

Highlights are too many. Here’s just a few.

The wonder that is artist Beth Cavener @bethcavener. With grace, humour, generosity and rare vulnerability Beth shared stories of resilience, failure, reinvention, heartbreak and perseverance in the course of becoming the artist that she is. All while demonstrating how she makes her incredible work.
Linda Bloomfield @lindathepotter - mistress of glaze. I only make two glazes for my work - both are from Linda’s book Special Effect Glazes. What a treat to meet the mind behind the science. Such wealth and depth of knowledge from this scientist, researcher, teacher, artist and treasure. .

Ebony Russel and Shana James discussion on their collaborative process for their exhibition, Circe - Witch, Woman, Goddess at @stalacontemporary. Rich work coming from the evolution of a friendship and sharing of knowledge. Inspired. @ebonyrussell.art @shanajames_printmaker

Seeing @robynphelan and @jenniferconroysmith. Once RMIT, always RMIT. Both wonderful artists, educators and mentors to me. Friend, artist and activist @madeleinethorntonsmith for reminding us to work to protect the safety and freedoms of all in our community.

The meetings and chats with really wonderful people. Clay people really are great. I’m yet to meet one I don’t immediately want over for dinner.

My besties and comrades in frivolity and friendship @twiningarts @holychops . The usual shenanigans plus some new ones roping in @geriatric.baby. There is a man posse out there still scratching their heads.

So much more - @ruth.li.art @biosphereboodja. Incredible. Enough name dropping. It was bloody great. For weeks I’ll be unpacking it and what it means for my creative direction, future projects and creating connection. Thank you @australianceramicstriennale
