BOOK CLUB: OTHER MINDS

Tuesday, October 6th (hey, that’s tonight!) at 6 pm.

Although mammals and birds are widely regarded as the smartest creatures on earth, it has lately become clear that a very distant branch of the tree of life has also sprouted higher intelligence: the cephalopods, consisting of the squid, the cuttlefish, and above all the octopus. In captivity, octopuses have been known to identify individual human keepers, raid neighboring tanks for food, turn off lightbulbs by spouting jets of water, plug drains, and make daring escapes. How is it that a creature with such gifts evolved through an evolutionary lineage so radically distant from our own? What does it mean that evolution built minds not once but at least twice? The octopus is the closest we will come to meeting an intelligent alien. What can we learn from the encounter?

Back Cove Books and Portland Trails invite you to join us on Sunday, October 11th at 11AM for storytime a draw-along with beloved local author and illustrator, Tom Booth! After storytime, we welcome you to create your own magic wand (Halloween costume prep!), create with cardboard, and more!

Back Cove Books will also provide small snacks, juice boxes, and art supplies for attendees - all you need to bring is your imagination and your adult!

The event is free, but please RSVP so that we can ensure we have plenty of art materials for participants.

Sometimes it feels like all I do is work and clean and renovate the house. So this was a nice lil reminder that I live in a beautiful place with an amazing community and there are little joys to be had every day.

Just a little bit of summer so far 🌞

What if you just… went?

A group of us remembered we have free will — and signed up for a mini summer adventure on a Monday night, instead of defaulting to scrolling on the couch.

Best. Decision. Ever.

Here’s how the night went:

🚤 Boarded the Lucky Catch boat from the Old Port
🦞 Quick, scenic boat ride across Casco Bay
🏕️ Arrived to Fortland, a historic island fort turned campground sitting right in our backyard that most of us had never actually been to
🔦 We explored the forts
✨ Took a cold water dip (yes there was glitter involved)
🔥 Dried off by the campfire with a picnic dinner and made s’mores
🌅 And then rode home on the water at golden hour

So grateful to @fortlandmaine for being the most magical island host and to @luckycatchcruises for getting us there and back in style.

TONIGHT!! Saturday May 9th at 7pm. The 2nd Annual Water Women Film Fest presented by Waterstruck Wellness in Newcastle comes to The Waldo 🌊

Created and curated by Two Maine Mermaids and Julia Dunlavey, the 2nd Annual Water Women Film Fest is a collection of short films that celebrate stories of courage, community, and the transformative power of water. During this program, you’ll journey from Maine’s winter waters to the English Channel, meeting remarkable women who have found strength, healing, and community through their connection to the ocean, ponds, or the river. Every film you’ll see offers a unique perspective on what it means to be a woman in, on, and near the water.

Come one, come all! We’ll be raffling off a nordic circuit session at Waterstruck - two dreamy nourishing hours cycling through heat, cold and rest. Magic.

Total runtime of tonight’s program: 90 minutes

Doors open at 6:30. Films start at 7!

One of the five films screening in the 2nd annual Water Women Film Festival at the Waldo on Saturday May 9th is LITTLE DIPPERS.

Directed by local filmmaker Mike Mallen, this 21-minute documentary film chronicles a community of cold-water swimmers on Southport Island, Maine and highlights the group’s journey through winter, focusing on themes of healing, community, and the mental/physical benefits of cold plunging.

Join us! Doors open at 6:30pm and the film program begins at 7pm. Concessions will be available.

Ooooooh the sun is shining, the tank is clean, and there is zero shortage of fun events happening in Portland (and beyond) this month! I’ve done a little digging to find you and your friends plans to fit whatever mood you’re in.

The Gathering Report by yours truly has gotten a facelift and a slight tweak. I’ll still be hosting a Let’s Be Friends (women only) book club and supper club this month, and this will be announced via Substack, along with other ideas for gathering with your friends.

Wear sunscreen, don’t forget to pay for parking and have a fabulous May😎.
