Had an absolutely lovely time at the @ludlowbookbinders Ludlow Fine Book Fair at the weekend. Much paper was bought, and much talking was done. So good to see everyone and to admire all the beautifully printed and bound things.

I wish I had deeper pockets so that I could buy some of the aforementioned and photographed loveliness, but I had to be very focussed on the paper I need for upcoming prints (thank you @johnpurcellpaper). Am especially pleased with my stack of gorgeous black Somerset velvet offcuts, part of which I want to use for a proper edition of my Exclamatids print (last pic; it’ll have more stars, more space, gold and silver).

For anyone who loves an art gallery I highly recommend a visit.

BOOK NOW WATER WATER 💧 @coldharbourmill

Adam Morrigan (Red) is a heritage craft master in leatherwork, focused on the full natural transformation processes, utilising locally sourced materials and hides. He produces rawhide - used for drum skins, parchment and velum for illustration and art, alongside bark tanned leathers and oil tawed sheepskins, goat and deer hides. His skills are ancient and endangered. All materials, sourced locally, would otherwise go to landfill or incineration. Working by hand with traditional tools (referred to as bones) he works with age-old techniques and natural materials, enabling full engagement with the gentle craft of leather work. Red is fully committed to a sustainable, ecologically sensitive process - he has travelled extensively, working with indigenous peoples globally, his research is ongoing, enabling, learning and teaching the entire process from nose to tail.
Primitive reflections; ‘A world shaped by water.’ is a series of pieces reflecting the relationship we have with this quintessentially essential resource as a species.
The earliest alchemy of hide transformation is enhanced by immersion in water.
Red will be in the expo space demonstrating throughout the show!

Collaborative work as Rosie and Red Art and Leather has led to a new series of work, Analogue IN Digital Art. Ancient and profane; Red makes parchment, from sustainably sourced deer and goat hides, one of the earliest surfaces used for communication, the dead sea scrolls and Magna Carta were written on parchment. Rather than using it as a surface to write onto - the parchment was cut into 0’s - circles and 1s dashes. Then arranged to ‘spell’ words, suspended in front of Rosie’s monotype print representations of water. The copper wire suspends the code, it doesn't compute an on/ off signal, instead creating a shadow play on the watery surface below, binary code can be recorded both horizontally and vertically. Parchment was used in many global histories as the earliest form of TV - parchment puppet shadows used to tell stories, there is a connection with previous work Red made based on the idea of TV diners - watch the light and projection.
