This was not part of the plan.

Joining @twwguild was the single best thing I have done in my development as a woodworker. I joined 7 years ago because I felt stuck, and wanted to learn how to build better furniture. They seemed to have the best plans online, so I bought one.

Getting to take a live class with Marc was already more than I expected when I joined. Somehow that led to taking on a behind the scenes role helping with the Guild. In August I actually became a regular part of the channel through the @woodworkingmorningshow. That last one still feels a little surreal.

I'm incredibly grateful to @woodwhisperer and @nicolespag for trusting me with a small part of something they have spent nearly 20 years building, and for giving me the opportunity to contribute to a community that has given me so much.

The plans I bought were great, but I realized the Guild is a lot more than just project plans. It's a community of woodworkers sharing what they know, encouraging each other, and pushing everyone to improve. A huge part of the woodworker I am today came from that.

Come hang out with us every Friday on YouTube for the Woodworking Morning Show at 10 am Central (12:30 pm Newfoundland time 🙂)!

2025 was the year things finally clicked.

I went to @woodwhisperer ’s barstool class expecting to learn joinery and build a stool. I came home with confidence. That’s what pushed me into the bar cabinet: fluted floating panels, brass accents, hand-cut dovetails…stuff I never would’ve attempted before.

I reconnected with @nicolespag and started helping with the @twwguild . Running Watch-Alongs, meeting woodworkers, actually feeling part of something. That changed everything.

I got shop time with my dad @batt.gary . Two projects, a lot of laughs, and a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.

I leaned into my interest in Sam Maloof. His philosophy that the designer and builder should be the same person sent me back to basics. I dropped CAD and learned scale drawings, full-size sketches, and built my own templates. Slower, but the work finally made sense.

I started sharing more online just to connect. This hobby is isolating; it helped to feel less alone.

And none of this happens without my wife, @sabrinabatt3 . She booked the trip. Brought meals to the shop. Talked me down from the fire pit more than once. Building her a cookbook shelf was the least I could do. Her passion for cooking rivals mine for woodworking, she is a constant source of inspiration.

2025 ended up being the perfect woodworking year. Didn’t expect that.
