Environmental conservation begins with assuring that everyone has access to our natural resources and federally protected public lands. In partnership with YMCA of Rockies and Boyz N the Wood, the Joy Trip Project helped to create a safe and supportive community experience in Rocky Mountain National Park in which a cadre of Black men could enjoy a restful retreat in nature

Confession: I hit U-Turns for birds ( and other wildlife), heck I’ll put that thing in the median😂.

When’s the last time you hit a U-Turn for wildlife?

Who cares about bird names?

Apparently, the Director, since she made a movie about it! 🤷🏽‍♀️ And many more moms, and birders, like her. @AliyaJasmine opens up about why this project is important to her and for future BIPOC birders, like her daughter.

Can you imagine being named after someone who not only enslaved people but also collected human skulls to prove bogus racist theories?!

Our biggest wish is for black queer people to feel safe to be themselves, to feel like they don’t have to move through this world alone.

We can’t blame the Townsend's Warbler for wanting to stay in the penthouse!

In our short documentary, ‘Bird Names’, cinematographer @itsryanwilkes and Environmental Educator @tykeejames highlight the waiting game it takes to get that perfect shot. And also, give us a questionable lesson on anatomy!

I have a lifetime of memories at the Academy of Natural Sciences (@acadnatsci). Every generation of my family alive today has explored its halls (my little nephews in the second pic!). My grandma got me a membership to the Academy, and it was the primary place outside my home where I was able to feed my love of wildlife and biodiversity growing up.

As an adult, I have come to have an even deeper gratitude as leaders like Sean Stallworth (4th pic) brought celebrations of Black exploration and expertise in the natural sciences to the Academy (like the Black Excellence in Birding Galas!!); and as I’ve seen the results of INCREDIBLE programs like Women In Natural Sciences (@wins_ans). @acadnatsci played a huge role in my ability to follow my love of wildlife to a career, and remains an important part of the tapestry of what I love about my city, and the community of explorers I’ve come to know.

@drexeluniv and the @acadnatsci board, PLEASE do not close this incredible museum—the oldest natural history museum in the country—to the public. It is part of the lifeblood of this city and the pursuit of knowledge in the natural sciences.

I join countless others in calling on Drexel + Academy leadership, as well as leaders in city and state government ( @phillymayor, @governorshapiro) to take effective action to prevent its public closure!

Bird Names just won Best Documentary Short at the Miami Women Film Festival. Plenty of excellent men helped make this one too. But today, respectfully, they can hold our purses while we applaud the matriarchy. 👏

Very grateful to everyone who trusted us with this strange, funny, complicated little story about birds, names, history—and who gets remembered. Watch BIRD NAMES for free on @cbcgem or stream it in @cbcdocs YouTube channel.

“There’s something about this film that allows you to think very deeply about something very simple.” CBC Docs Executive, Lucius Dechausay (@luciusd) reflects on how ‘Bird Names’ leaves you more aware of your surroundings and the stories behind them. The interview was conducted by the film’s star @TykeeJames at a virtual screening during Black Birders Week.

You can now stream ‘Bird Names’ on CBC Gem and The Nature of Things YouTube now.
