Today I heard God say,
“oh little one,
little Korie,
all of your dreams are coming true,
and all the desires of your heart
are not far from you.”

And I wanted to argue;
to tell God there are still things
I am waiting on,
still prayers with their knees
pressed against the floor.

But the argument didn’t get past my steering wheel.
And the corn kept waving.
The sky kept opening.
The road kept carrying me closer to holding my second book in my hands.

And suddenly
I understood:
gratitude is not pretending
everything has arrived.
It is noticing
how much already has.

It is looking around
and whispering,
thank you
for this life
I once prayed
I would live.

Gratitude for the friends across the nation
who invite me in for a cup of our favorite drink.

Gratitude for the love that walked through the door when I least expected it.

Gratitude for the giants who walked before us, among us and along side us.

Gratitude for the PROOF that God is good.

Gratitude for the writers, the readers, the poets, the prophets and the community who bust through the seams with loving kindness.

Gratitude for the best friends who speak life, love boldly, laugh heartily and go through this thing called life with me.

Gratitude for the cousins who keep the family first.

Gratitude for the page that not only sees me, but holds me and carries me.

Gratitude to Spirit for trusting me to be the vessel.

Gratitude to the ones who believe in the dream and help me birth them into reality.

Gratitude for the ones who don’t play about me!

I am living in the love.
I am living out my dreams.
I am living the poem.
All of my hearts desires are within reach.

AND SO IT IS!!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT! Meet Tylyn Johnson (‘22)

Born and raised on the eastside of Naptown, Tylyn K. Johnson (they/he) is a floating writer reflecting a complex love through the framed lenses of Black Queer artistry. Their language has appeared in numerous spaces, including Lolwe, just femme and dandy, Door’s Always Open Journal, and Dogwood Alchemy, with more work forthcoming. A lover of all creativities, he’s recently been dipping his quill into the visual arts. Follow their work on Instagram/Twitter @TyKyWrites

AND, don’t miss Tylyn’s performance at N_I_G_H_T_J_A_R’s September performance (and open mic) on 9-16-26, 7 pm, at Tube Factory Art Space, which is close to campus in Garfield Park

UINDY Stats: Back in the day on campus, Tylyn engaged with...

* BSW—Social Work
* Applied Spanish minor
* Honors concentration
* Etchings & Etchings Press staff

Fun Facts:
* “I think the UIndy BSA Open Mic Night was my first stage as a poet!”
* “My honors project was the development of a scrappy digital poetry game called “Communal Creativity.” Folks can find it on itch.io”

Career Stats: These days, Tylyn’s career path has led them to...

* Program Manager
at a Community Center in Indy
lots of performances around town as an Indy poet and artist

Tylyn shares, “I think something that was key to my growth as a poet/artist is that I explore. In college, I sought and found a lot of spaces to play with poetry, to see how it flows beyond the page. Learning how to see creation everywhere has helped to sustain and sharpen me.”

Tylyn’s “advice to students is to be in community with creation. Make your poetry/art, and also listen and watch and read the works of others. Spite the powers that be and live lives that art can be found in, which is everywhere, always. Don’t get buried quietly by those that seek our end.”

Join us on Wednesday, August 12, for nightjar featuring Piper Parks! Yes, this month we’re on the second Wednesday rather than the third because Piper is moving out of state to start an MFA program in poetry. (Yay!) Come hear the work of UIndy’s Poet Laureate before she leaves town! And for the open mic, Piper’s prompt is: Write a poem inspired by a photograph. Doors at 6:30, reading at 7, at CAMi (the Tube), you know the notes of this song.

Piper Parks graduated from University of Indianapolis with a Bachelors in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Born and raised in Columbus, IN, she grew up surrounded by art and creativity—eventually fueling her passion for storytelling and poetry. She has previously worked with Constellation Stage and Screen and Pigasus Pictures on her Project Constellation 2022 screenplay Blue. Her poetry and other creative work can be found in Polaris Undergraduate Magazine and Etchings Literary and Fine Arts Magazine.

The second annual Juneteenth Melts ICE Open Mic hosted by the @stfuartcollective had a wonderful turn out this past friday! Thank you to all the vendors and performers who filled the Indy Liberation Center as we reflected on the radical roots of the holiday alongside the radical resistance we cultivate together today. As our communities face repression from ICE & IMPD, we honor each other with the space to celebrate the people’s power!
