Typografie zwischen Leidenschaft und Lizenzpolitik – Gedanken zu Monotype, Lizenzen und dem Verlust von Nähe in der Typografie Typografie ist für mich weit mehr als ein gestalterisches Werkzeug. Sie ist Haltung, Ausdruck, Sprache und das Herz meiner Arbeit. Meine Überzeugung: Schriftgestalterinnen sollen für ihre Arbeit fair entlohnt werden. Gute Schrift ist Handwerk, Kunst und Zeit – und sie kostet zu Recht Geld. Darum kaufe ich Schriften grundsätzlich legal, erkläre meinen Auftraggebern die Vorteile hochwertiger Typografie – und warum sie Teil einer seriösen visuellen Identität ist. In vielen Fällen vertraue ich auf die Großzügigkeit einzelner Foundrys, die mir für Entwürfe Vollversionen zur Verfügung stellen. Dieses Vertrauen und der direkte Austausch sind unbezahlbar – und genau das macht Typografie lebendig. Doch dieses Gleichgewicht gerät ins Wanken. Immer mehr Foundrys vertreiben ihre Schriften nicht mehr selbst, sondern über Monotype (MyFonts). Viele dieser Schriften gibt es dort nur noch mit jährlich wiederkehrenden Lizenzgebühren – statt wie früher als Einmalkauf. Ein Webfont, der früher z.B. 80€ kostete, kostet nun 80€/Jahr, pro Domain. Für mich als Gestalter, besonders für Auftraggeber, ist das ein unattraktives und schwer handelbares Modell. Hinzu kommen Abos, die Zugriff auf über 250.000 Fonts bieten – allerdings nur zur Entwurfsnutzung. Für die kommerzielle Verwendung dürfen lediglich zehn Schriften lizenziert werden. Was bleibt, ist ein Gefühl der Entfremdung. Die Freude an der Typografie, die Lust am Experimentieren, das Entdecken und Verstehen von Formen – all das wird durch diese Modelle ausgebremst. Ich wünsche mir, dass möglichst viele Foundrys den Mut behalten, ihre Schriften weiterhin selbst zu vertreiben. Denn nur der direkte Austausch zwischen Gestaltenden und Schriftmachenden bewahrt, was Typografie immer ausgezeichnet hat: Leidenschaft, Respekt, Individualität und Authentizität. Monotype mag die größte Datenbank haben – aber keine Plattform kann die Leidenschaft ersetzen, die zwischen Menschen entsteht, die Typografie wirklich lieben.
