enchanting corfu and kefalonia in the spicy summer breeze - the latter being the homeland of my ancestors (well, half of it anyway - the other half is celtic. any other anninos’ out there though?) 🕊️

way out west of mainland greece in the ionian sea lie two islands of cypress-covered hillscapes that cascade into cool turquoise waters 💌

venetian architecture from a bygone empire speckle the towns, and magnificent sunsets reflect those rainbow-coloured homes right back 🕊️

in this slice of nostalgia, you’re seeing: the villages of assos, fiskardo, and poros in kefalonia (plus a quick snap of my all-time favourite taverna, to spitikon), along with garitsa bay, vlacherna monastery, and faliraki beach in corfu 💌

i hope the four strong winds lead you out that way, someday 🕊️

They’re called Evzones. Greece’s Presidential Guard, standing watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, right in front of Parliament.

The uniform isn’t just for show. That kilt has 400 pleats, one for every year Greece lived under Ottoman rule. Every stitch is history.

To even qualify, you need to be almost 1.9 metres tall, in peak physical condition, and get through training that fails nearly half the candidates.

Then comes the part people don’t see: they stand completely still for a full hour, in the heat, in the cold, in the rain, no blinking away a fly, no shifting when their legs go numb. Every 15 to 20 minutes they’re allowed the smallest shift of weight, just enough to keep the blood moving.

An hour. Motionless. On camera, on shift, watched by hundreds of tourists a day and they don’t break. Not once.

That’s not just a uniform and a pose for photos. That’s a soldier holding a nation’s memory still, one hour at a time.

Devastation in Greece today.

Two helicopters have collided today whilst aerial firefighting in Psatha. A search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched. The Greek Army has been immediately mobilized to assist.

This means there have been now five deaths over the last few days fighting the out-of-control fires across Greece.
