POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We featured an alumnus earlier this year when he hosted our alumni social, but we think he needs a longer #alumnispotlight of his own.

Chad Ringler, B.A.'01, B.S. '14, is not only a double graduate of UAA, but also the proud owner and operator of Brewerks, a craft brewery in midtown Anchorage. Ringler's first degree in Biological Sciences led to meeting his future wife on the first day of classes. Later, when he went back for a Civil Engineering degree, he established a lot of close friends and a professional network with his professors. Read more about Ringler at the link in our bio.

This past Friday, the UAA Fine Arts Building was opened to the community to kick off the UAA College of Arts & Sciences 50th Anniversary Celebration. Visitors had the opportunity to explore behind the scenes the creative spaces that our Art, Music, & Theatre students and faculty work in throughout the academic year.

To commemorate this experience, Professor James Riordan & Department Chair Mike Conti, designed and printed a unique poster that visitors were gifted. Thank you, professors, for creating this memorable work of art.

We are so excited to be able to participate in celebrating CAS‘s 50th anniversary. As well as all the upcoming events that will be happening throughout the next school year. If you would like to learn more about how and when we are celebrating, please check out the Main CAS webpage for updates (link in bio on IG)

- DOGS IN BACKPACKS. Okay, who doesn’t love a dog in a backpack. Also we played trivia as a team called SPY GRANDMA and we WON!
- Doing some cooking demos for the kids at the local Headstart program. Made my Miso Coconut Butter Beans and they were a hit. One kid came back FIVE times to “try” the dish again lol.
- WORKSHOP AND BOOKSIGNING at the @homerpubliclibrary. This is a special one as it’s one of the first BIG events I’ve done in Homer. Hopefully more soon. Thank you to the Homer Library, @homerbookstore and Friends of the Homer Library for being so amazing and supportive.

Seriously what a month. Thank you to everyone for sharing in all of the amazing things that have happened and just being a part of my life.

I’m gonna take a bit of a break on events for October as we enter fall and snow times, but I’m looking forward to more events later this year and next spring!

You might notice that we have a lot of big changes happening in the UAA Department of Art. From new display walls in the halls to the renovation of the Arc Gallery next to the Consortium Library.

Alongside those changes, we’re excited to have so many new talents in our department, bringing fresh and creative voices to each Area of Study, as well as to our exhibition spaces!

Please welcome to Professors Brian Walker II, Ayla Murray, Julian Wong-Nelson, and Christopher Richards!

Make sure to make our new faculty feel welcome, as you’ll be seeing them around campus a lot! And of course if you are interested in learning more about the courses they offer and opportunities we have in the department to learn, make sure to set up an appointment with your advisor!

Our last featured UA Scholar is Ella Wheeles. Majoring in English, Ella chose UAA to stay close to home and nurture a love for literature. 📖 📚

What inspired you to apply to UAA?

I’ve lived in Anchorage my whole life. So when it came to selecting a college, UAA was my top pick so I could remain at home but get a great college experience nonetheless.

What inspired you to pursue your major?

Since I was in 6th grade, I have loved to write. Writing and reading got me through the pandemic and after that I knew what I wanted to do with my future: inspire as many people as possible through literature.

What does the UA Scholars Award mean to you?

The UA Scholars Award made it much more realistic for me to be able to afford college. This scholarship encouraged me to stay connected to my hometown while giving me many options of career paths and opportunities.

What are you looking forward to most this semester?

This semester, I am most looking forward to trying out new activities and meeting new people. High school was such an immense part of my life and as much as I will miss it, I am ready to move on.

Michael Davidson knows that a little sacrifice can lead to a lot of success! This UA Scholar and chemistry major started this fall. Here's what Michael had to say:

What inspired you to apply to UAA?

The phenomenal opportunities that were given to me to stay in-state. This lets me still get a quality education while being close to home.

What inspired you to pursue your major?

My advisor was a chemistry major and really nurtured my love for the sciences. He always welcomed conversation or debate and it made me love chemistry more and more.

What does the UA Scholars Award mean to you?

It means a lot and really culminates my four years of hard work in high school, not only in my academic results, but it reflects the countless hours sacrificed for success.

What are you looking forward to most this semester?

I am looking forward to focusing on my studies while also having more freedom and the ability to live on my own.
