And the winner is…

…the University of Alabama-Birmingham (@uab_shp)! 🎉

Congratulations to this amazing team who worked diligently and strategically to propose a game-changing solution to this year’s case challenge. You truly showcased what it meant to collaborate, exude confidence, and embody what healthcare leadership looks like.

To all of our other top-placing teams and participants, we can’t thank you enough for taking part in the 31st Annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition. We witnessed some amazing talent, and we can’t wait to see what comes next in your bright futures.

To our Case Sponsor, @kaiserpermanente, we are grateful for your undying support in helping to bring tomorrow’s leaders to the forefront. Without you, none of this would be possible!

To our judges and attendees, THANK YOU for showing up for our participants.

We are already excited for next year’s Conference & Case Competition. But until then, stay tuned for more content from this amazing week.

The Open Door Initiative (ODI) was created to expand exposure, mentorship, and access to healthcare career pathways for students from all backgrounds. With the public school year coming to an end, we had the opportunity to bring that mission to G.W. Carver High School.

Partnering with @uab_msha, we introduced students to both the Physician Associate and Healthcare Administration fields, discussed different pathways into healthcare, and led a hands-on blood pressure workshop. Seeing the students engaged, asking questions, and practicing clinical skills firsthand was a reminder of how impactful mentorship and exposure can be #uabpa

On February 19, Tiffany Ferrel, Hoang Le, and Rachel Warren presented their case, “Do No Harm, Even After Discharge: Rethinking Healthcare Waste” at the annual UAB Case Competition.

Focusing on the often overlooked impact of healthcare waste, the team challenged systems to think beyond patient care inside hospital walls and consider their responsibility to community and environmental health. Their solution, MedHorizon, emphasizes greater transparency through digital tracking, actionable data insights, and staff education to improve waste practices, reduce costs, and strengthen accountability across the system.

Well done to this team for their work on a complex challenge! ♻️

I hope you plan to join us. Link is in bio! :

I’ve been invited to speak at an exciting panel discussion during The Power of Us: Generations Connected by Purpose program, sponsored by the Women in Healthcare Leadership Board of UAB HSA.

Come hear me at the first panel, “Don’t Be Left at the Water Cooler,” alongside UAB and industry executives. The event is ACHE qualifying education credit eligible, and we’re having lunch!

Quote Insights:
I’ve decided to start sharing quotes or similar pieces in @jhairstonphd posts. The quote included here, though misleading as the title of the post is “I’m Speaking”, has no direct correlation to the post or event. 😂 But…

A colleague of mine shared this quote by Samuel Beckett on LinkedIn a few days back, and my colleague’s reflection resonated with me, so I want to share: “…we have to learn to speak softer … to make room for new voices. It’s not giving up power; it’s making room for new wisdom.” Let’s continue to pour into others and be intentional with the influence we leave… that’s what really matters.

The 3rd Annual NAHSE Alabama Silent Auction was an unforgettable night where healthcare leadership and community came together for something truly special. We want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Borkowski for sponsoring the @uab_msha students and for empowering them to lead the future of healthcare. We also want to shout out Dr. Jennings, who is the MSHA Program Director, for her unwavering commitment to shaping these future leaders. Mayor Woodfin’s presence took the evening to the next level by showing just how powerful collaboration between healthcare and the community can be. This event was nothing short of amazing, and your support is creating waves that will shape healthcare for years to come!
