You might know Professor Ziegler as a chem professor, but this month, he’s UA’s very own MAD SCIENTIST. (Insert thunder sound effect.) Stay tuned for more spooky experiments.

🔬 Advancing our understanding of light-driven chemical reactions Dr. Chunming Liu, assistant professor jointly appointed in the @uakron School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering and Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry, has received a $554,000 National Institutes of Health Research Enhancement Award. The three-year project will investigate how photocatalytic reactions work at the molecular level. Using light to drive chemical reactions is increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry for synthesizing drugs and other bioactive compounds, but many of the fundamental steps involved remain incompletely understood. Using advanced single-molecule imaging techniques, Liu and his team will observe individual photocatalysts in real time to better understand what happens during these reactions and what factors influence their efficiency. The research could help scientists develop more efficient processes for chemical synthesis, potentially improving product yields and reducing wasted material. Congratulations, Dr. Liu, on this recognition of your research and contributions to chemistry and materials science! #UAkronEngineering | #Chemistry | #PolymerScience | #PolymerEngineering | #Research | #NIH Headshot photo of Dr. Chunming Liu
