Last night, United Against Racism activists in Newry attended the People's Forum event to discuss the myriad of issues affecting the city.

Central among those is the institutional managed decline of Daisy Hill Hospital, which has been further exacerbated by staff shortages and poor working conditions.

The ongoing functioning of local healthcare is disproportionately down to the work of our non-Irish neighbours, we are forever indebted to them for the vital service they provide to all who call this region home.

The sowing of racism in the city by fascist actors only serves to deepen the issue. As highlighted by a non-white consultant stepping away from their role due to vile racist abuse inflicted upon them and their family.

The creation of a toxic xenophobic and racist atmosphere across Ireland must be promptly stamped out in every instance. Wrongly scapegoating our foreign neighbours will not move the dial one iota in solving the collective struggles that we face together.

To quote James Connolly "Let no Irishman throw a stone at the foreigner, he may hit his own clansman".

Last week we protested at AIB, which is potentially about to disgracefully sign a contract with 'Israeli' cybersecurity firm SNYK. While there, our activist Maire also gave a tribute to Mary Morello, who died recently at the age of 102.

Mary was a lifelong campaigner against injustice. She took part in the US Civil Rights movement during the 1960s, and went on to be a significant activist for free speech.

She was also the mother of Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, another great campaigner and an advocate for Palestine.

The way we honour Mary's legacy is to continue our activism, and fight against the funding of genocide in Ireland and elsewhere.
