The report on the impact of the Ballymena racist riots by Karen Eyben from Involve discussed in this Belfast Telegraph article is a sad indictment on how institutions have failed the people. More than 40 children in Ballymena did not return to school after the pogroms. Multiple instituinal failings have contrbited to the fertile ground in which racism and extremism flourish. What's true in Ballymena is true on this whole island.

Building tension in the area known for years but left to fester.

The condition of private rented accommodation deteriorating rapidly.

Overcrowding and visible decline.

Migrant workers in increasingly vulnerable conditions.

Irresponsible employers failing to support workers to integrate and settle.

Poverty, deprivation and lack of long-term investment in some areas.

Social media disinformation.

Lack of political leadership.

Communities abandoned to fix issues by themselves and ultimately failing to do so.

This is what helps racism and extremism to spread in communities. For three years in a row we have had hideous racist pogroms, far-right riots and attempted ethnic cleansing in some areas. Judge for yourselves whether the issues above have been addressed by NI institutions and those in power and whether a fourth summer of racist attacks is predictable.

Posts like this one have become routine on social media. They are a contributing factor to 'concerned citizens', 'vigilantees', 'auditors', 'citizen journslists' and other assorted snoops feeling emboldened to harass and surveil people.

Whatever anonymous busy-body took photos of people's faces, cars and homes without their permission and posted them online doesn't seem to care about people's safety and their right to privacy.

Posts like the one captured here contain known racist tropes about invasions and attempts to instil fear on the back of a people simply going about their day. Some of the comments under the post speak for themselves and to why we have had three summers of racist pogroms. We have reported the post, everyone should, but social media platforms allow posts and pages like this to stay up.

This time, prominent politicians have been tagged under the post, including the Deputy First Minister. There is an opportunity for political representatives to defend their constituents whose only 'crime' appears to be the colour of their skin; and to effectively tackle online misinformation and attempts to stir up tension.

Politicians who claim they represent everyone in the community and oppose racist intimidation in their constituency have a duty to act to protect innocent people from harassment and to prevent disinformation to spread. Let's see if there is any leadership shown here. by @uarbelfast

A hideous video of violence and aggression is circulating online. The video depicts Freedom Dad, a self-appointed 'citizen journalist', aka a right-wing convicted criminal with an otherworldly audacity, who has become a fixture at anti-immigration rallies. The video appears to capture a disturbing scene involving him and, allegedly, his MUCH younger ex-partner. The video is painful to watch and would be triggering for survivors of gender based violence.

The brass neck of it: to make relentless rage-bate content online as a grift, to constantly spew accusations, stereotypes and generalisations about migrants, to style yourself as a protector of women and children, as a vigilante nonetheless, and yet to also have a video that shows such a disturbing level of violence?

The utter hypocrisy of it all. The dangerous hypocrisy of it all.

This Freedom Dad video emerges at a time when we yet again see a common theme among the rioters who terrorised people in Belfast, Glasgow, Southport and other locations: MANY of them have been reported for domestic violence. See the screenshots from media reports, they speak for themselves.

Intimidating migrants on the street, brutalising women behind closed doors.

This place doesn't have a problem with immigration. It has a problem with a domestic violence epidemic, with institutional complacency towards right wing extremism, and with dangerous levels of hypocrisy.

Now and always, we must reject the far-right, call them out for their bullshit at every opportunity, and never fail to oppose their caustic narratives. There is no space for right wing violence here!

The most recent deplorable effigy that has been erected in Moygashel is the latest example of the utterly unacceptable public display of Islamophobia in this country.

The fact that such hateful symbols continue to be posted publicly without earnest political and legal challenge is a symptom of an ongoing endemic of racism, xenophobia and prejudice that continues to run rampant in our society.

We need more than words of condemnation from elected representatives. We need urgent and decisive action to tackle Islamophobia and the systemic dehumanising of people that we have been witnessing for years. Muslim people, migrant people and people seeking asylum here are valued members of our society that deserve to live in dignity, safety and equality, just like everyone else.

UAR not only condemns this display of hate, but also the political word gymnastics that attempts to explain away the very serious underlying issue of Islamophobia at the heart of this construction. When politicians, media outlets and systems of justice continue to allow these overt acts of racism to occur year after year without direct and unwavering condemnation, the perpetrators of this kind of violent imagery become increasingly emboldened.

We must be clear: the impact of symbols such as this effigy must be considered in the context of the sordid history of three summers of pogroms against our Muslim, migrant and Global majority neighbours. There is no place in our society for this kind of hatred and intimidation.

We cannot be dragged back to a painful recent past when masked men bullied communities, instilled fear and demanded submission. NI is forwarding facing and a home to us all, we all belong here, we are not going back! by @uarbelfast
