Successful grain-bin drying depends on four basics:

✅ Know the starting and target moisture
✅ Start drying promptly
✅ Maintain even airflow
✅ Monitor grain temperature and moisture

Because Arkansas air can be humid, outside conditions matter. Check temperature and relative humidity before relying on natural-air drying.

Here are some fact sheets from the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture to help you with this topic. Connect with your county extension office for more information and help.

Dongyi Wang, an assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering at the University of Arkansas, has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award to develop autonomous systems that can handle soft foods with adaptability and precision. Unlike rigid manufactured goods, agrifood products vary widely in shape, texture and size, making them difficult for conventional automation to manage.

Wang’s research could be a game-changer for food manufacturing, bringing smarter, more flexible robotics to one of agriculture’s toughest automation challenges.

Dr. Kaushik Luthra’s work goes beyond traditional rice milling—focusing on the entire post-harvest system, including drying, storage and grain management. By studying factors like moisture content, temperature and climate conditions, he provides data-driven recommendations that help farmers, processors and companies make better decisions.

“I’m an engineer, but I want to become a people’s engineer—one who listens, learns and helps stakeholders solve real problems.”

Nicole McKellar, a junior studying biological engineering and German, has been selected for a DAAD RISE fellowship to research sustainable agriculture at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany, this summer. The program is one of the most selective undergraduate research fellowships in the world.

Her project tests combinations of mineral fertilizers and bio-stimulants on wheat and soybeans to see if they can strengthen crops while reducing chemical dependence. She plans to bring the data back to Arkansas for her honors thesis.

This past weekend, we brought 21 students from Biosystems Engineering at Auburn University to the Southeastern Student ASABE Conference, Rally 2026 at the University of Arkansas. Despite occurring over Auburn University’s spring break and having a 10 hour drive, we brought more students than Auburn has ever had to Rally. We are extraordinarily excited to have this growth and commitment to professional development and interest in ASABE!

The University of Arkansas Biological and Agricultural Engineering did an incredible job of planning and facilitating a wonderful networking and learning experience for the Biosystems Engineering students across the entire Southeast. Our students got to learn about everything from rice production in Arkansas to professional development tips! It was an extraordinarily valuable and enriching experience for our students, and we came back with so many new ideas and understandings of how our studies apply to the world around us.

We are also very pleased to announce that in addition to winning Up-and-Coming Chapter, Auburn ASABE has secured the bid to host Rally 2027, to occur next spring. We are excited for this incredible honor and cannot wait to build off of U of A’s phenomenal example and host students from all over the Southeast next year!

“This trip opened my eyes to how interconnected engineering and sustainability are. It was both inspiring and so much fun!” – Turner Seibert, College of Engineering student.

During this two-week study abroad experience in Ghent, Belgium, students explore sustainable food systems and their engineering connections through visits to high-tech greenhouses, breweries, and vineyards, all while immersing themselves in European culture and earning academic credit.

Ready for an unforgettable learning experience? The deadline to apply for the 2026 cohort is February 1!

When Aiden Nyhus chose the biological engineering program at the University of Arkansas, he knew he wanted to do something “engineering-focused.” Still, he had no idea he would end up testing new jets, weapons systems, and other technology for the U.S. Air Force.

Last moments of senior year 🥰
Including:
Presenting my sustainability capstone (interning with Olsson!)
Presenting my senior design about revitalizing a key river corridor in Siloam Springs, Arkansas
Taking my last picture ever on the football field (felt especially weird not being in costume)
Getting my engineering ring
The first generation luncheon
And then finally graduation! So thankful that I got to have my family there with me! Ending with a hog call and throwing our caps was the perfect way to end it!
