Exciting news! The Windgate Accelerator Grant will award $10,000 each to a competitively selected group of graduating and recently graduated MFA and BFA Studio Art students from the School of Art. ✨

This grant awards twelve artists the opportunity to bridge the critical post-graduation year, providing resources to create new work, attend residencies, travel, or prepare for exhibitions and graduate school. Each recipient will also be paired with a faculty mentor from the School of Art or the broader UA System for guidance and professional support.

📄 Curious to learn more? Attend our virtual informational session this Thursday, October 9. More details can be found in the last slide. Applications are due November 1 (link in bio).

✨ Made at SOA | Meet Molly Martin ✨

MFA Studio Art candidate Molly Martin currently has work featured in two regional group exhibitions: To M(end) at Midnight Gallery in Bentonville, AR (p.s. the show ends this weekend!), and Unboxed: Rethinking the Grid at Missouri State’s Brick City Gallery in Springfield, MO (through October 3).

As an interdisciplinary artist, here's what Molly has to say about her process which has taken shape at the School of Art:

"Everything in the studio carries potential. I move between drawing, painting, and sculpture, exploring repetition, movement, and transformation through cycles of cutting, stitching, layering, and recombining. My works evolve in conversation with one another. Marks reappear from piece to piece and shapes shift across mediums and materials, forming a kind of ecosystem.

I draw on a physical vocabulary shaped by gymnastics and outdoor play, where twisting, balancing, bouncing, and looping become ways of thinking about rhythm and form. These embodied memories surface in a line spiral, a painting balanced on the edge of its support, or a sculpture suspended mid-motion.

Through this process I search for rhythm and resonance, a sense of liveliness that hovers just before it can be named."

At the School of Art, students like Molly gain real-world opportunities to showcase their work regionally and nationally, while being supported by a place that drives experimentation, collaboration, and professional growth.

We're proud to be fostering this kind of education, making the University of Arkansas, and the state, a place where artists launch their careers.

Lately, I've been doing an interesting marriage between my artistic practice and semiotics, and this time, I went berserk on abstract. It is an assignment from one of the classes being taught by @david_andree
In summary, a thing or a symbol only has meaning to us based on what instructs our beliefs - history, culture, religion, or personal experience.

Meaning is what we call it!
